Job Description
 

Performs skilled work supervising water reclamation facility process operations on a designated shift. Work involves responsibility for the efficient operation of a water reclamation facility and routine adjustments to equipment and machinery operating controls. Exercises some independent judgement in making adjustments to machinery, equipment, and related control apparatus in accordance with established procedures and standards. May provide direction for subordinate operators engaged in maintaining and operating various types of wastewater process equipment and collecting sewage and sludge samples. Work is normally performed under general supervision and is reviewed primarily through observation and through the analysis of charts and reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate with two (2) years progressively more responsible wastewater treatment plant operations experience, including some supervisory or lead experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. Possession of a current State of Florida Wastewater Operator Class B Certificate for wastewater treatment at time of appointment. Must obtain Class A Certification within two (2) years of accepting position of Shift Supervisor. All positions must pass annual respirator physical; no facial hair allowed between the face and sealing surface of the respirator face piece. Must have a home phone or cell phone, or be able to be contacted in the event of an emergency work situation.

 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Inspects wastewater plant equipment and machinery to determine that all machinery is operating properly; monitors various stages of the sewage treatment process; collects samples at various stages of the process, and performs routine operational analyses to determine effectiveness of treatment procedures.

Operates gates, valves and other mechanical equipment; monitors and adjusts treatment plant equipment such as chlorinators, digesters, sludge collectors, filters, chemical feeders, conveyor systems, screens, and related equipment; monitors SCADA process screens; and on the basis of recorded information makes adjustments to controls in conformance with operating instructions to ensure proper treatment of sewage.

Performs light maintenance services on a variety of plant equipment and machinery and may assist mechanics in major repairs and installation work.

Instructs, trains and oversees other operators in plant procedures and operations; maintains records and prepares periodic summary reports of operations.

Reports malfunctions of equipment to Chief Operator.

May be required to perform various ground maintenance duties as assigned.

Performs related work as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of the operating principles and practices applicable to wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery.

Knowledge of various chemicals used in treatment and processing of sewage.

Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required of the work.

Some knowledge of mechanical maintenance and lubrication requirements of the equipment operated.

Ability to operate various mechanical equipment and machinery.

Ability to accurately follow routine operating and recording procedures and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to instruct subordinate operators in plant operations.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Ability to input information into a SCADA terminal and maintain accurate logs and records.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees as necessitated by the work.

Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.

Ability to detect faulty operating characteristics in equipment or processes and make minor mechanical repairs or adjustments.

Ability to work in and around raw sewage on a daily basis with varying noise levels and odors.

Ability to work around chlorine, methane, and other hazardous materials.

Ability to perform inspections and work assignments which involve various physical duties such as walking, climbing stairs, twisting, turning, lifting heavy items, digging, shoveling and manually operating gates and valves.

Ability to work shifts, including all hours, weekends, and holidays.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
