Job Description
 

Performs specialized field and office work in fire prevention with responsibility for enforcement of fire safety codes, laws, and ordinances and includes inspection of commercial buildings to ensure compliance. Initiative and judgment must be exercised to recognize fire hazards and acquire code compliance. Field work exposes employee to varying weather conditions, chemicals, noxious fumes, insects, heights, and confined areas. Work is performed under general supervision, according to established guidelines, and is reviewed through daily conferences.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate with four (4) or more years experience in fire inspection, fire prevention; or an equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector Certification from the Division of State Fire Marshal with a valid Florida Driver's License. Must pass a background check which includes a polygraph.

Additional Qualifications for Promotion:

Promotions are not to be considered an automatic function of longevity and are subject to the review and authorization of the Supervisor. The employee’s last performance review must have resulted in an overall rating of Meets standards or better with no factor rating of less than meets. Proficiency standards for each level are established and maintained by the supervisor.

 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Inspects buildings and areas of public assembly to check for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protection equipment, adequacy of fire exits, and for general compliance with fire prevention laws.

Enters inspection results into a computerized database to complete inspection reports.

Inspects and tests installation and maintenance of fire protection and alarm systems for compliance with approved plans.

Reviews plans for new construction and public assemblies to provide input concerning fire safety of building/assembly; inspects new construction for compliance with approved plans.

Issues notices of code violations, consults with and advises occupants regarding appropriate corrective action.

Interprets and/or explains fire safety codes and other related ordinances.

Maintains record of daily activities and compiles information for monthly activity reports.

Conducts research of property records in preparation of code violation cases.

Compiles data, prepares reports outlining findings and recommendations; presents cases to Code Enforcement Board.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of fire safety and firefighting, fire prevention codes, laws, codes, and ordinances.

Skill in public relations and dealing effectively with people.

Ability to read blueprints.

Ability to perform physical fire inspections which include walking, lifting, bending, stooping, and crawling.

Ability to ascertain facts through investigation.

Ability to visually recognize a fire hazard.

Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

Ability to use equipment and measuring devices as they relate to testing fire protection features.
