Job Description
 
Performs professional and administrative work associated with the accurate translation and dissemination of Spanish collateral materials to ensure compliance with the City of Orlando's brand, strategies, and messaging standards. Works within the Office of Communications and Neighborhood Relations to translate and localize communication plans and messaging to Spanish-speaking communities. Creates consistent translations that are grammatically correct and contextually accurate for the City's websites, collateral and/or informational materials, flyers, invitations, press releases, and social media postings. Responsible for fact-checking text to ensure accuracy, including researching topics at hand and making the necessary edits to provide an effective Spanish translation that communicates City information, resources, and services. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Digital Communications Supervisor. Performance is reviewed through observation and client feedback.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Translation, Interpreting, Linguistics, Communications, or related field and three (3) years of fluent written and spoken English to Spanish translation experience; or an equivalent amount of education, training, and experience.
 
Responsibilities

Audits, creates and publishes Spanish translations of every page on orlando.gov, using word processing, as well as editing and publishing content through the city's current content management system (CMS). Researches, uses technical know-­how and is in constant contact with clients who own the content being translated.

Translates printed marketing material, such as flyers, brochures and social media graphics for various departments and divisions throughout the city.

Translates communication messaging for newsletters and social media posts. This includes full translation of city's main external newsletter, as well as assisting in translating and localization of social media content for our Spanish-speaking community.

Translates formal elected official speeches, including Mayor's State of the City and Downtown speeches.

Translates closed-captioning for city-produced videos to share with the public.

Translates building and office signage in various city facilities. These include temporary, printed messages, as well as more-permanent, metal, official signage.

Translates forms and/or official documentations, both in digital and paper formats. Forms can include permitting applications, summer camp registration or interest forms.

Certifies translations done by other staff or vendors.

Creates log of commonly used terms and phrases; ensuring usage of correct terminology that reflects mayor's key priorities and overall communication messaging strategies and goals.

Serves on emergency response team and is responsible for all the Spanish translations of emergency information, press releases and updates provided to the public and staff.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Extensive knowledge and fluency in the Spanish language.

Knowledge of MS Office Suite and computer operations.

Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques used in updating websites and other social media platforms.

Knowledge of grammar and spelling in English and Spanish.

Knowledge of cultural context in Spanish content to provide relevant and localized translation. Skilled in accurately translating audio and audio/video recordings.

Skilled in translating the nuances applicable to Spanish used in countries such as Chile, Peru and Colombia, as well as understand the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.

Skilled in written and verbal communication in English and Spanish.

Skilled and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Skilled in the application of principles, methods and techniques used with the Internet and various platforms therein.

Skilled in switching language modes on both Mac and PC computers and keyboards.

Skilled in effective time-management, organizational and leadership competencies.

Ability to proofread materials and identify and correct errors.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to work independently and as a member of the team.

Ability to perform successfully in a fast-paced, intellectually intense, service-oriented environment with tight deadlines.
