Job Description
|
|
Performs professional and managerial work for the Families, Parks and Recreation (FPR) Department. Is responsible for designing, overseeing, and managing the cultivation of the City of Orlando's tree population. Promotes the benefits of trees and ensures diversity of age, species, and design. Work is performed under the general direction of the Assistant Division Manager and reviewed through meetings and reports.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Forestry, Landscape Architecture, or related field plus two (2) years experience in urban forestry, municipal parks, and grounds operations, including six (6) months supervisory experience in the field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver’s License required. International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification required. Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) preferred. Certified Landscape Inspector of Florida preferred.

Develops and maintains an Urban Forestry Program with a goal of 40% canopy.
Plans, directs, and coordinates activities to ensure projects are accomplished within prescribed time frame and funding parameters.
Oversees and manages the tree planting program to improve the City’s urban tree canopy to maximize the economic, equity, ecological, and social benefits of trees in Orlando. Expands scope of the program to incorporate additional facets that would positively impact the City's tree canopy.
Supervises, plans, and evaluates the work of assigned staff and contractors. Oversees full-time and seasonal employees as well as volunteers; creates additional positions as needed; oversees training techniques and processes; and reviews and monitors staff regarding proper procedures and techniques.
Utilizes City’s Street Tree Trust Fund for planting and education programs. Oversees, schedules, and organizes tree quantity and variety selection
Contributes to the maintenance of the tree plotter system database and inventory of the City’s trees.
Educates the public to encourage tree planting throughout the City. Works with neighborhood groups to educate and train on reforestation efforts.
Expands equity areas for underserved populations to be able to obtain trees and positively impact more neighborhoods.
Creates more awareness utilizing marketing techniques to expand the knowledge and scope of the various programs.
Processes, orders, and installs the Memorial Bench and Tree Application.
Oversees and manages related budget.
Oversees/manages multiple contractors doing different scopes of work including installation, pressure washing, grinding, trimming, heavy equipment operators, watering services, cement pouring, and general handyman skills.
Oversees the various grants; ensures all required facets are completed; and adheres to related budget and deadlines.
Oversees U.S. Forest Service grant in order to: expand the City's tree equity initiative, which focuses on planting trees in low income neighborhoods that lack tree canopy; build the next generation of forestry staff by training and overseeing internships for low income youth, in collaboration with the Department's Youth Employment Program; and design and implement a pilot project that will allow the City to begin maintaining trees on private property for low income residents

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of Arboriculture BMP, best management practices.
Knowledge of City of Orlando landscape code.
Knowledge of Arboriculture (cultivation of trees and shrubs) or Silviculture (growing and cultivation of trees) disciplines.
Skilled in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Skilled in creative thinking and problem solving.
Skilled in public speaking.
Ability to lead and oversee diverse teams that include City employees and outside contractors.
Ability to effectively communicate with the general public, outside agencies, and City employees.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to work under adverse conditions such as inclement weather, exposure to insects, and noise.
Ability to bend, stoop and reach.
