Job Description

|
The Police Wellness Specialist develops and implements wellness programs focused on fitness, exercise, and healthy lifestyles for the Orlando Police Department. Responsibilities include promoting wellness programs and activities to increase participation and engagement. Schedules and conducts wellness/fitness classes such as lunch and learn seminars, cardio and strength training sessions, yoga, stretching classes, and choose-to-move breaks to promote employee health and well-being. Performs comprehensive fitness and wellness assessments and provides suggestions for lifestyle improvements. Work is performed under the direction of the Training Lieutenant, and performance is reviewed through program evaluations and results obtained. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Health Science, Exercise Physiology, Wellness, or a closely related field and one (1) year of experience in fitness instruction, wellness programs, or health education required. CPR/First Aid required. Valid Florida Driver’s License is required. Nationally recognized group fitness, personal training, health/fitness instructor, or nutritional counseling certification required. Police background exam required.

Responsibilities

|
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of exercise science, including kinesiology, functional anatomy, exercise, nutrition, risk factor identification, lifestyle modification techniques, injury prevention, exercise programming, health promotion, emergency procedures, human behavior psychology, human development/aging, and metabolic equations.
Skilled in the use of exercise equipment.
Skilled in the use of a computer and the Microsoft Suite.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, public speaking, and the use of audiovisuals.
Ability to safely demonstrate, instruct, and direct fitness and/or wellness classes.
Ability to effectively communicate and work with diverse audiences.
Ability to assess and demonstrate exercises and the use of gym equipment using proper techniques and standard protocol established by the American College of Sports Medicine: Anthropometric/Body Composition assessment, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and physical work capacity.
Ability to provide a safe environment for exercise testing and exercise participation.
Ability to work on several projects at once.

Develops, implements, and schedules fitness classes, personal training, and wellness programs for the Orlando Police Department.
Enforces facility rules and regulations and inspects equipment and facility daily for safety and cleanliness.
Maintains daily attendance for the general use of the facility and classes.
Counsels employees on health and wellness matters; performs comprehensive fitness and wellness assessments, and provides suggestions for healthy lifestyle improvements.
Prepares wellness articles, announcements, bulletins, and promotional materials through appropriate media for the Police Department. May be required to conduct research and develop reports and publications for distribution. Gathers statistical information for reports.
Provides guidance and assistance to agency employees in filling out wellness consultation paperwork.
Maintains accurate records and tracks progress, monitors attendance, participation, and program outcomes. Files and maintains confidential and sensitive information.
Attends meetings and training.
Performs other duties as may be assigned.
