Job Description
 

The Public Arts Coordinator administers the City’s public art programs to help maintain the City of Orlando’s Public Art Collection. Responsibilities include installing, and rotating exhibitions in three (3) City Galleries, organizing special events related to the arts, providing staff support for the Public Arts Advisory Board, coordinating with other City departments in a variety of arts‐related tasks, assisting professional calls for the One Percent for art program on CIP projects, and promote public art, and assists with other community activities. Work is performed under the general supervisor of the Museum Director. Work is reviewed while in progress, meetings, and results obtained.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in art administration, fine arts, community development, public administration, or related field and three (3) years of experience in public art programs, OR‐ two (2) years of experience working for a community arts organization, municipal or state arts‐related program that includes aspects of program & exhibition planning, administration, execution, and evaluation; or an equivalent combination of education training and experience. Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe Graphics software is required. Experience with public art industry software preferred. Valid Florida Driver’s License is required.

Required to work nights and weekends as needed.

Knowledge of current developments in public art concepts, planning, theory, and criticism.

Knowledge of public art-related principles practices, laws, regulations, and procedures pertaining to art on public and private lands.

Knowledge of public art policies, including artist selection processes, contracting, project management, and public processes associated with art projects.

Knowledge of Contemporary art and related issues.

Knowledge and familiarity with principles, practices, and procedures of public art programs.

Skilled in the use of computers and Microsoft programs.

Skilled in writing correspondence, label copy, and materials for public distribution.

Strong communication skills in addressing the members of the public, businesses, elected officials, and other groups.

Exceptional organizational skills, multi‐task, prioritize work, and meet critical deadlines.

Ability to complete tasks accurately and on time to meet deadlines.

Ability to monitor program budgets and contracts.

Ability to manage art projects at various stages of development.

Ability to manage all phases of the design, fabrication, and installation of the artwork.

Ability to prepare reports and proposals and present recommendations orally and in writing.

Ability to create and use graphics appropriate for written documents and web pages.

Ability to conduct public and community meetings professionally.

Ability to collaborate across multiple City departments and community partners.

Ability to work with confidential information.

Ability to understand and/or learn required public art field software and best practices.

Coordinate the City’s Public Art Program.

Works with artists, artist groups, cultural institutions, and City departments in curating/creating 12 exhibitions annually in 3 City Gallery Spaces.

Work to create visual didactics (wall text, vinyl, signage, labels) in collaboration with Marketing & Design staff.

Understand and maintain the Public Art brand and adhere to high aesthetic principles.

Write contextual copy for exhibition labels, introduction, press releases, curator, and artist statements. Edit copy from guest curators and artists to ensure grammatically correct written copy.

Collaborate with the Registrar to obtain loan agreements, contracts, and insurance documents.

Arrange public art receptions, talks, and events for Terrace Gallery, and City Hall.

Serves as staff liaison, with Recording Secretary and Director to the City’s Public Art Advisory Board including preparing reports and projects for Board Meetings (4 annually).

Prepares, distributes, and updates promotional materials for Public Art installations, events, and programs.

Maintains an up‐to‐date public arts section of the City's website.

With other City departments, assists in the calls for One Percent for Art Program on CIP projects.

With Registrar and Risk Management conduct annual inventory/records on art collection and assets.

With Registrar creates visual art checklists for insurance, media, and archives.

Upon request rotate/refresh artwork installed throughout City Hall and other offices throughout the City.

When necessary, coordinate conservation, maintenance, matting & framing, etc. of artwork.

Performs other duties as may be assigned.
