Job Description
|
|
Performs skilled work involving establishment, layout, installation, and maintenance of landscape material per plan or blue print. Performs skilled work in the preparation, cultivation, and care of landscape material such as annuals, groundcover, shrubs, and trees in City of Orlando parks, facilities, medians, and rights-of-way. Performs all installation and maintenance per proper horticultural methods. Is responsible for the application of fertilizer and non-restrictive pesticides throughout the parks, facilities, and rights-of-way. May assist in propagating plant material at the City nursery. Is responsible for pruning plant material according to Florida Grades and Standards. Work is performed under the direction of the Crew Chief or Field Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and two (2) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Department of Transportation Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) or Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Basic Certification (Flagging) required within six (6) months of hire. Valid Florida Class B CDL may be required.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Selects and installs annuals, perennials, ground cover, shrubs, and trees per proper horticulture methods.
Prepares and establishes beds for planting, removing existing soil and adding prepared soil and amendments to improve beds.
Recommends plant material for use in flowerbeds and landscape.
Inspects and monitors plant material to determine health and vigor and to detect insects, disease, and weed control.
Dispenses fertilizer and non-restrictive pesticides on plant material.
May operate front-end loader/backhoe, dump truck, sod cutter, tiller, edger, and other equipment necessary for the operation of the Section.
Provides leadership on horticulture jobs; uses chainsaw and pole saw.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of modern practices and principles of horticulture, floriculture, agronomy and related fields.
Knowledge of plant biology and common and botanical names of trees, shrubs and groundcover.
Knowledge of insects and diseases that affect trees, shrubs, groundcover, perennials, and annuals.
Knowledge of proper establishment, layout per landscape plan or blue print, installation and maintenance of landscape projects.
Knowledge of proper pruning techniques according to Florida Grades and Standards of Nursery Stock.
Knowledge of application methods for fertilizer and non-restrictive pesticides.
Skill in the proper removal and installation of annuals, shrubs, containerized trees and large caliper trees in the landscape.
Skill in the proper use and safe operation of various hand and power operated tools utilized in all phases of horticulture work.
Skill in the use of front-end loader/backhoe and five-yard dump truck.
Skill in bed layoutAbility to lift 40 lbs+
; ability to load/unload trucks with landscaping materials.
Ability to bend/stoop, push/pull, dig, kneel and crawl.
Ability to work with various chemicals and noxious fumes in various weather conditions.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees and the public.
Ability to pull trailer.
