Job Description
|
|
Performs responsible, skilled work involving the operation of large side-loading automated vehicles (65,000 GVW) to collect residential and commercial refuse from designated areas of the City of Orlando. Work is performed under the supervision of a Sanitation Supervisor. Performance is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through direct observation of routes, trip tickets, and discussion of problems.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of the Solid Waste Driver program or two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment vehicles of 18,000 GVW or more and familiarity with hydraulics operations; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Class B CDL required. Must be able to read, write, and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Operates side loading automated vehicle to collect residential and/or commercial refuse and recycling, assuring customers are served in a timely manner.
Transports refuse to landfill, transfer stations, or recycling center for processing.
Works independently to ensure refuse is collected in accordance with Sanitation Code, Division policy, and safety standards.
Weighs full and empty trucks on scales and obtains weight ticket for refuse or recyclables.
Answers questions from residents regarding regulations and directs them to contact appropriate office for additional information. Notifies supervisors of customers not complying with Division regulations.
Completes daily activity/trip tickets.
Delivers carts, bags, and educational materials to new customers.
Completes daily truck checklist before leaving the yard and upon completion of route.
Turns vehicle to Fleet Maintenance for repairs and preventive maintenance to avoid unnecessary damage to equipment and significantly increase costs.
Cleans vehicle upon completing daily tasks.
Dumps garbage truck.
Assists supervisors with picking up labor pool.
Assists other drivers with finishing routes.
Wears proper safety gear.
Troubleshoots own equipment when out in the field.
Familiarizes self with knowledge of routes and handicap pick-ups.
Helps train other drivers.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of safe use and operation of automated refuse collection equipment.
Knowledge of Sanitation Code (CH 28) and Division policy relating to solid waste collection, including unique rules of cart collection.
Knowledge of traffic laws, occupational hazards, and appropriate safety precautions.
Knowledge of City streets and collection routes.
Knowledge of appropriate methods for lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling heavy bins and containers.
Skilled in the safe operation of all solid waste collection vehicles.
Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.
Ability to tip greater than 100 carts per hour.
Ability to coordinate use of remote-controlled mechanical arm in tight spaces and mindful of overhead hazards.
Ability to lead, train, and ensure the safety of assigned employees.
Ability to perform work requiring physical strength and endurance.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, employees, and supervisors.
Ability to handle exposure to extreme weather conditions such as rain, cold, and heat.
