Job Description
 

This position is the trainee in the Wastewater Plant Operator series in which employees work under the close supervision of a Certified Treatment Plant Chief Operator or supervisor while learning to carry out routine duties in the operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and preparing to obtain a Class C Treatment Plant Operator license. Performs other related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and successful completion of science courses that relate to wastewater treatment, water reclamation, or other related area; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that is approved and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Employees must obtain a Class C Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license within two (2) years of hire date and are expected to advance to full working level. A one-time extension of six (6) months may be granted based on performance and approval by management and Human Resources. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to safety regulations. Employees in these positions must pass annual respirator physical and any other state mandates. No facial hair allowed between the face and the sealing surface of the respirator face piece.

 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Performs basic, routine, and preventive maintenance work at the wastewater treatment plant.

Monitors wastewater treatment process and equipment; collects and examines samples to detect any changes, unusual conditions, or malfunctioning in the equipment or process; and takes appropriate action.

Cleans tools, equipment, and facilities.

Maintains logs on process and equipment.

Monitors alarm system and takes corrective action as appropriate.

Assists certified plant operators and supervisor in the performance of duties; communicates any unusual conditions in plant process or equipment.

Stays alert at all times for dangerous or hazardous conditions especially around machinery and plant equipment; concentrates on plant processes to prevent problems.

Works with supervisors to obtain assignments and training; works with other City/state/federal/local officials; and works with the general public.

Changes out Chlorine and SO2 which requires respirator equipment and on-the-job training.

Works within a hazardous environment requiring extensive certified training in SCBA involving hazardous chemicals.

Drives pickup truck and golf cart; rides bicycle.

Operates pumps, blowers, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Basic knowledge of wastewater and water collection, treatment, and distribution.

Ability to learn progressively more advanced techniques and methods in the operations of wastewater treatment plant and water reclamation.

Ability to learn; to make decisions regarding daily operations of plant and safety requirements; to monitor conditions of equipment; and to ensure compliance with state requirements.

Ability to perform required safety sensitive procedures.

Ability to pass the state examination and obtain a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator “C” certificate within two (2) years.
