Job Description
 
Performs skilled herbicide application work at numerous aquatic and terrestrial sites throughout the City of Orlando. The employee in this position is responsible for following the supervisor's instructions in applying herbicides. Herbicides are applied to control unwanted vegetation without damaging desired vegetation and private property. Performs normal and some specialized maintenance in aforementioned work areas. Work is performed under the supervision of a licensed supervisor. Serves as lead worker over aquatic chemical technician(s).

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree or Technical Certificate and two (2) years of experience in right-of-way and aquatic herbicide application; or an equivalent combination of related training and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Valid Florida Restricted Pesticide License in the aquatic and right-of-way categories. Certified by trained instructors in basic CPR and first aid.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Operates an air boat and/or spray truck with mechanical pump system in order to apply herbicides to unwanted vegetation in a specific areas. May also operate back pack sprayers, granular herbicide applicators, and related equipment.

Mixes herbicides and related chemicals in proper proportion and strength for control of vegetation.

Performs and assists in calibration of application equipment to ensure proper distribution of herbicides.

Surveys areas in need of spraying and inspects areas after treatments to ascertain results.

Maintains inventory of herbicides.

Prepares and maintains a daily activity log and prepares daily herbicide and equipment usage reports as required by Department and State of Florida.

Performs and assists mechanic on repairs and maintenance of boats and application equipment when necessary.

Follows oral and written instructions.

Drives trucks with trailers (towing).

Performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Advanced knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in general maintenance work in a storm water management program.

Advanced knowledge of techniques and equipment used in herbicide application.

Advanced knowledge of herbicides and chemicals used in aquatic and terrestrial vegetation control.

Ability to mix herbicides and related chemicals in proper proportion and strength for control of vegetation.

Ability to read, write, and communicate orally.

Ability to recognize safety hazards in the work involved and to take precautionary measures to protect self and others.

Ability to walk, reach, stoop, dig, and push or lift heavy objects up to 75 pounds.

Ability to swim and stay afloat in water.

Ability to identify aquatic and terrestrial vegetation.

Ability to drive a vehicle while towing a boat and other equipment.

Ability to operate air boats, pontoon boats, and jon boats.
