Job Description
 
Performs skilled work in the operation and maintenance of City of Orlando swimming pools, including recirculation/filtration systems, chemical feeding systems, and related computer automation to continuously protect swimming pool water from contamination and protect the health, safety, and welfare of all program participants. Is responsible for purchase and maintenance of chemical supplies, chemical test kits, and other related equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of a Recreation Program Supervisor. Work is reviewed through direct observation of results achieved, reports, and conferences.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and at least three (3) years of experience in swimming pool operations, maintenance, and repairs, preferably including one (1) year of post-certification experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Certified Pool Operator Certification (National Swimming Pool Foundation) or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification (National Parks & Recreation Association) required. Must be able to swim. Florida Swimming Pool Service License desired. Supervisory ability desired.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Inspects and performs regular testing of swimming pool facilities and supporting equipment, such as chlorinators, chemical feeders, filtering systems, automated control systems, pumps, and motors, in order to identify potential operational problems and to comply with local and state health requirements.

Diagnoses operational trouble including mechanical failures, leaks in recirculation systems, and electronics malfunctions of automated operations controller and filter microprocessor. Makes repairs, adjustments, and/or makes necessary calls to correct. Diagnoses water chemistry problems; makes corrections, adjustments, or makes necessary contacts to correct. Operates and maintains specialized equipment for treatment of pool water.

Operates and maintains specialized equipment for treatment of pool water including: automated high pressure sand/slow rate sand and gravel/vacuum sand/vacuum diatomaceous earth filter systems; computerized pool operation controllers; ozone generation/feed systems; carbon dioxide feed systems; chlorine gas and bleach regulators, pumps and injectors; recirculation pumps and motors for filtration, vacuum, and water play systems; gas fired, electric pool, and portable water heaters and aeration systems; and various valves, gauges, and meters.

Assists with needs assessment and development of repair, renovation, and new construction projects.

Assists with the development and implementation of aquatics maintenance training programs for seasonal and permanent staff.

Assists with procurement/inventory of needed materials and supplies. Keeps maintenance and repair logs as required.

Provides technical assistance in the development of maintenance procedures and schedules for swimming pools, equipment, and related facilities.

Transports hazardous materials to pool sites (chlorine gas cylinders, dry chlorine, muriatic acid and caustic soda) and installs chlorine gas cylinders.

Performs inspections at aquatic facilities and makes recommendations for technical work in the construction, maintenance, and repair to pools, equipment, docks, fountains, beach ramps, and beaches.

Assists supervisory personnel by acting as liaison with Facilities Management for recommended construction, repair, and maintenance.

Performs under water repairs and maintenance to pool lights, fittings, and surfaces.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools utilized in the repair and service of various types of mechanical equipment.

Knowledge of basic electrical theory used to repair/maintain equipment.

Knowledge of procedures, tools, equipment, and sullies utilized in the construction, renovation, maintenance, and repair of swimming pools, public fountains, boat ramps, and related facilities.

Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety and health requirements for aquatic facilities and safety rules/regulations.

Skilled in swimming and scuba diving.

Skilled in operation/maintenance of swimming pools.

Ability to read, understand, and apply manuals, mechanical drawings, etc.

Ability to keep records and prepare reports.

Ability to lift heavy objects and operate service vehicles.

Ability to make mathematical computations; read, interpret, and apply blueprints and other engineering schematics.

Ability to train and instruct other personnel.

Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships.
