Job Description
|
|
Performs skilled chemical spraying work at the various parks within the City of Orlando. Responsible for evaluating spraying requirements for insect and disease control, selecting proper herbicides, and applying chemicals following approved techniques to maintain an effective control of undesirable vegetation and to prevent damage to adjacent vegetation. Performs normal maintenance functions related to the overall preservation of park facilities and grounds. Work is performed under the supervision of a licensed crew leader or technical supervisor. Work is evaluated through observation of the results obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma/GED; two (2) years of experience in turf and/or woody ornamental maintenance involving chemical application depending on the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Limited Florida State Pesticide Application License required. CDL with Tanker Endorsement May be required based on area of assignment and Florida Public Applicator's Restricted Pesticide License with Ornamental and Turf Endorsements required. A valid Florida Driver's License may be required depending on the area of assignment. Additional license may be required depending on the area of assignment.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Inspects turf, landscape beds, annual beds, athletic fields, and other areas of woody ornamentals and turf for insect damage or presence, disease in plant material, improper soil nutrient content, and other forms of turf damage.
Evaluates weed control requirements by physical inspection and identification of vegetation type and extent of infestation, which may require stooping, reaching, and digging.
Selects appropriate chemical agent for control of specific diseases, considering type, infestation, environment, and vegetation.
Mixes and applies chemicals to destroy or control growth using spray equipment in conjunction with truck or boat with motor as appropriate; may carry spray equipment to treat indoor areas.
Maintains logs of all treated areas, specifying turf problem, chemical used, date and time of treatment, and application rate; sets up signage as necessary.
Maintains equipment used for chemical treatment including truck, boat and motor, and sprayers.
Performs pest control in park areas by identification of pests; selects appropriate chemicals and application.
Applies chemicals; sprays around buildings; provides weeding and fertilization services; and identifies insects and fungus on plants.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in general maintenance work.
Knowledge of techniques and equipment used in the application and use of various control chemicals.
Knowledge of spray chemicals used in the growth and control of vegetation.
Knowledge of water and air pollution standards as related to chemical spraying.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to recognize safety hazards in the work involved and take precautionary measures to protect self and others.
Ability to meet the public; to give information regarding the parks, facilities and regulations; and to provide for the safety of visitors.
Ability to perform physical inspection of various turf and vegetation, to include reaching, stooping, digging, and walking.
Ability to effectively communicate with the public the hazards involved with the spraying if any.
Ability to lift chemical spray equipment.
Ability to work with various chemicals and noxious fumes in various weather conditions.
