Job Description
 
Performs responsible, skilled work involving the operation of large front-end loading vehicles to collect commercial refuse from designated areas of the City of Orlando. Work is performed under the supervision of the Field Supervisor. Performance is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through direct observation of routes, trip tickets, and discussion of problems.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of the Solid Waste Driver Program, or two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment vehicles of 18,000 GVW or more and familiarity with hydraulics operations; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Class B CDL from any state required prior to employment. Valid Florida Class B CDL required within thirty (30) days of employment. Must be able to read, write, and follow instructions.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Operates front-end loading vehicle to collect newspapers and/or commercial refuse, making sure that customers are serviced in a timely basis.

Transports newspapers, plastics, and telephone directories to vendors for processing.

Oversees the work of one or two refuse collectors to ensure refuse is collected in accordance with sanitation code, bureau policy, and safety standards.

Weighs full and empty trucks on scales and obtains weight ticket for recyclables.

Collects telephone directories from multiple drop-off sites Citywide.

Using a rear-end loading vehicle, collects telephone directories from businesses and multi-family communities generating over 100 directories.

Packs front-end loading vehicle with plastics collected along residential routes for delivery to plastic vendor.

Answers questions for residents and directs them to contact appropriate office for additional information.

Completes daily activity/trip tickets.

Delivers recycling bins, bags, and educational materials to new participants.

Completes daily truck checklist before leaving the yard.

Turns vehicle into Fleet Maintenance for repairs and preventive maintenance.

Cleans vehicle upon completing daily tasks.

Works with and is familiar with the operating routing systems (Routeware).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of safe use and operation of recycling collection equipment.

Knowledge of sanitation codes and Department policy relating to solid waste collection applicable to recycling,Knowledge of traffic laws, occupational hazards, and appropriate safety precautions.

Knowledge of City streets and collection routes.

Knowledge of appropriate methods for lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling heavy bins and containers.

Skilled in the safety operation of solid waste collection vehicles.

Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.

Ability to lead, train, and ensure the safety of assigned employees.

Ability to perform work requiring physical strength and endurance.

Ability to endure exposure to extreme weather conditions such as rain, cold, and heat.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
