Job Description
 
Performs semi-skilled work in the operation of moderately complex construction/maintenance equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks of average difficulty involving the safe operation and routine maintenance of assigned equipment. Tasks, at times, are performed under hazardous conditions and employees are expected to be particularly alert and careful. Under general supervision, employees are required to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion by observation and through results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma/GED; one (1) year of experience in the operation of assigned equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience. Must be able to read, write, and follow instructions. Florida Commercial Driver's License Class A, B or C, with tanker endorsement, may be required prior to employment depending on equipment operated by the position. Some positions require Aquatic, Right-of-Way, and restricted Pesticide Licenses prior to employment.

Definition:

Moderately complex equipment, normally over 26,000 GVW, can be operated after an informal training session of two to four weeks. The equipment is normally operated by one (1) employee on public roadways. The consequence of errors can be significant in terms of cost of repairs and damage to other private vehicles and there is a chance of injury to other employees and citizens.

Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Operates equipment such as claw trucks, asphalt rollers, concrete transit mixers, large dump trucks, water trucks for Green Up, vac trucks, front-end loaders, slope mowers, spray rigs, air boats, power boats, and a variety of other mid-sized equipment; works a pole saw and chain saw.

Transports employees, materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites.

Performs routine maintenance and servicing on equipment being operated to include checking tire air pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel.

Visually checks equipment, reports maintenance, or repairs problems at the beginning and the end of the work day; makes sure that equipment is properly equipped, serviced, and cleaned.

May perform manual and/or laboring tasks; uses hand tools and operates power tools either separate from or in conjunction with equipment being operated or tasks being performed.

May operate heavier and more complex equipment on a relief basis or in an on-the-job training capacity to acquire experience and develop skill and proficiency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of operational and minor maintenance characteristics of larger trucks and moderately complex motorized construction/maintenance equipment.

Working knowledge of traffic laws, occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Some knowledge of the use and care of hand and power tools and equipment related to assigned areas.

Some knowledge of the City and its geography.

Skilled in the operation of specialty and moderately complex motorized construction/maintenance equipment which may involve sitting, speaking and hearing.

Skilled in the operation of larger trucks and/or moderately complex motorized construction/maintenance equipment which may involve working at heights or in confined areas.

Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools related to assigned areas.

Skill in the maintenance and servicing of equipment used in assigned areas which may involve working under conditions of extreme weather, excessive noise and around noxious fumes.

Some positions involve working around insects.

Ability to perform work requiring physical strength and endurance.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
