Job Description
 
Performs semi-skilled work in the operation of moderately complicated construction/maintenance equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks of normal difficulty involving the safe operation and routine maintenance of assigned equipment. An employee in this class may also be a helper on a large complex piece of equipment that requires more than one employee for safe and efficient operation such as the drilling rig, sewer vacuum trucks, etc. Tasks, at times, are performed under hazardous conditions and employees are expected to be particularly alert and careful. Under immediate supervision, employees are required to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion by observation and through results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma/GED; no experience required but some experience in the operation of assigned equipment is desired; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience. Must be able to read, write, and follow instructions. Florida Commercial Driver's License Class A, B, or C is required prior to employment depending on equipment assigned to a position. A valid Florida Driver's License may be required for some positions depending on area of assignment.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Operates small dump trucks, bucket trucks, tractors, forklifts, and a variety of other light weight equipment.

Operates tractors pulling a variety of accessory equipment to cut grass, mow weeds and brush, spread fertilizer, and to perform other related operations.

Transports employees materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites.

Performs routine maintenance and servicing on equipment being operated including checking tire air pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel.

Visually checks equipment, reports maintenance, or repairs problems at the beginning and the end of the work day; makes sure that equipment is properly equipped, serviced, and cleaned.

May perform manual and/or laboring tasks; uses hand tools and power tools either separate from or in conjunction with equipment being operated or tasked being performed.

May operate heavier and more complex equipment on a relief basis or in an on-the-job training capacity to acquire experience and develop skill and proficiency.

May load or unload trucks by hand or by operating small mechanical loader.

Preps and maintains ball fields for rentals and partnerships; performs routine maintenance on athletic fields and courts (football, volleyball courts, soccer, outdoor basketball courts, and baseball); helps with prepping athletic fields and courts for game when needed; and reports any field or court issues to our supervisor.

Maintains and delivers City Stage for events.

Delivers and stores a multitude of items for the Division as a whole.

Operates light equipment; uses reel mowers, tractors, and forklifts; and trains others on how to use mower.

Cleans light equipment used; uses pressure washer; uses forklift in moments to move heavy objects; and often moves office furniture for different departments within the City.

Arranges different events and food/school/toy drives; helps the commissioners with their events; helps with clean up after events; and drives pickup truck with trailer attached to transport equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of traffic laws, occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions associated with the operation of automotive equipment.

Knowledge of operational and minor maintenance characteristics of lightweight trucks, tractors and simple motorized construction/maintenance equipment.

Knowledge of the use and care of hand and power tools and equipment related to the assigned areas.

Knowledge of the City and its geography.

Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools related to assigned areas.

Skill in the operation of light weight trucks, tractors and/or simple, motorized construction/maintenance equipment which may require standing, walking, sitting, bending, pushing and pulling.

Some positions require skill in the operation of large equipment, trucks and excavators, as well as the ability to climb, work at heights and in confined areas.

Ability to work in or around the following conditions:

extreme weather, insects and excessive noise.

Some positions involve the ability to work around noxious fumes.

Ability to perform work requiring physical strength and endurance.

Some positions require lifting of up to 50+ pounds on a regular basis.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others which may require speaking, hearing and reading.

DEFINITION:

Light weight equipment, normally under 26,000 GVW, that can be operated after a limited training period on specific equipment.

The equipment is normally operated by one (1) employee.

The consequence of errors being minor, easily corrected with a nominal cost for correction or repair and little chance of injuries to other employees or citizens.
