Job Description
|
|
Performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of sanitation collection containers which involves pressure cleaning, sanding, painting, and moving of refuse containers. Employees assigned to this classification perform a wide variety of tasks. May assist welders as required. May assist Collection Section and task force in collecting residential, recycled, and/or commercial refuse. Work is performed under the supervision of the Sanitation Section Supervisor or Welder III.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate, ability to read, write, and follow instructions plus one (1) year experience in use of high pressure water hose, air sanders, spray painters.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Cleans refuse containers by using shovel, high volume water hose, pressure steam cleaner, and various cleaning chemicals to remove excess garbage.
Removes loose paint, rust, and debris using a wire brush, scraper, portable grinder, and other tools.
Applies primer and paint to containers using airless paint sprayers and/or other paint application tools as needed; applies self-adhesive decals according to prescribed standards.
Performs routine maintenance and servicing on equipment being operated.
Visually checks equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems to assure equipment is always ready for use.
Performs manual and/or laboring tasks; uses various hand and power tools as required.
May assist Collection Section and task force in collecting residential, recycles, and/or commercial refuse.
May operate heavier and more complex equipment on a relief basis or in an on-the-job training capacity to acquire experience and develop skill and proficiency.
Assists with routine welding as required (gas, arc, and wire feed).
Rolls refuse containers to vehicle as required for pick up and repair.
Washes heavy vehicles and equipment, including garbage trucks and large containers.
Collects and disposes of recycled refuse in solid waste administrative buildings.
Visually checks equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems to assure equipment is always ready to use.
Orders related paint and other supplies.
Prepares and paints dumpsters.
Maintains and cleans the Weld Shop.
Maintains property and landscaping.
Unloads trucks for both supplies and cleaning.
May assist Collection Section in other duties.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of operation and minor maintenance characteristics of lightweight tractors and front-end loaders and other simple motorized construction/maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of use and application of various paints and cleaning chemicals.
Skilled in use and care of hand and power tools related to assigned area.
Skilled in applying knowledge of safety procedures.
Ability to work in and around the following conditions:
extreme weather, insects, excessive noise, noxious odors and fumes, harsh chemical cleaners, hot water, paint, rust, dust, and jagged steel.
Ability to perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; some assigned tasks may require lifting up to 50+ pounds.
Ability to walk and work in awkward positions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others which may require speaking, hearing, and reading.
