Job Description
 
Performs heavy manual work collecting commercial/residential refuse and recyclable materials in designated areas of the City of Orlando. Is responsible for cleaning of collection vehicles. Must be safety conscious as work is performed in the streets. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Sanitation Equipment Operator and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for compliance with established guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to follow instructions. Some prior manual general labor experience desired; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Collects commercial/residential refuse and designated recyclables by lifting and carrying containers from curb, from backyard, or at multi-family communities; sorts recyclables by type/color in a compartmentalized vehicle; places materials in vehicle; and returns empty bins or containers to the same place where found.

Rolls refuse containers to vehicle for dumping when required.

Places notices/door hangers on properties when irregularities are found (late set out, unrecyclables, bins not visible, dirty containers, etc.) in order to alert resident of the problem and required corrective action; notifies field supervisor of irregularity.

Cleans vehicle upon completing daily tasks using pressure steam cleaners.

Covers and straps full trailers with tarp to avoid littering and added collection costs; packs paper in hopper.

Answers routine questions for residents and directs them to contact appropriate office for additional information.

Assists with delivery of recycling bins, bags, and educational materials to new participants.

Assists driver by directing traffic or by directing operator while backing vehicle.

Loads and unloads trailers utilizing a forklift; hitches and unhitches trailers; checks truck and trailer daily; and reports non-operative parts to driver or supervisor.

Assists with driver safety; assists driver when backing out.

Moves dumpsters into position.

Looks out for over head lines and power lines.

Deals nicely with the public.

Is constantly exposed to fumes from exhaust pipes and household hazardous waste (pool chemicals, cleansers, etc.), and corrosive chemicals (chlorine beach, harsh cleansers). Also is exposed to mosquitoes, flies, bees, and unguarded pets.

Performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of appropriate methods of lifting, carrying, pulling, and/or pushing heavy bins and containers.

Knowledge of City street locations.

Knowledge of traffic laws, occupational hazards, and appropriate safety precautions.

Skilled in the use of pressure steam cleaners.

Ability to follow instructions.

Ability to collect solid waste which involves lifting of collection containers weighing between 40 - 60 lbs+
, frequent running, climbing, bending, jumping, carrying, standing, pushing, pulling, and reaching above the head.

Ability to operate pressure steam cleaners and related equipment.

Ability to lift and move, with assistance, recycling trailer compartments weighing from 150 to 250 lbs+
Ability to work around excessive noise in traffic, inclement weather such as rain, and extreme heat and cold.
