Job Description
|
|
Performs hand watering, fertilizing, pruning, and hand weeding along with other basic landscape and maintenance tasks. Primary duties include driving throughout Downtown Orlando and hand watering trees, planter pots, planter boxes, and other landscape areas while removing weed growth, trash, and other landscape debris from planting areas. Employees assigned to this job must operate a City of Orlando vehicle (truck) in addition to a watering tank mounted to a trailer, small gas-powered water pumps, spray nozzles, and other small hand tools and equipment. Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to forty pounds (40 lbs). Work is assigned by the Downtown Maintenance Program crew leads and supervisors and is inspected for quality and productivity.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate. Valid Florida Driver's License and home phone or cell phone required. Ability to read, write, and follow instructions required. Prior landscape maintenance experience desired.

Trims, weeds, fertilizes, and applies mulch to flower and landscape beds which involves bending, stooping, crawling, and reaching over head.
Loads materials on trucks and drives pickup truck.
Operates equipment used in horticulture such as blowers, edger, trimmer, etc., which involves pushing, digging, and reaching over head.
May operate pickup truck and related equipment.
Performs routine grounds maintenance activities, such as planting and trimming hedges using hand and power tools.
Services and performs minor maintenance such as greasing, lubricating, and cleaning of tools and equipment; checks fluid levels on equipment and services batteries.
May assist street maintenance crews in removing and compacting earth with shovels, clearing debris, picking up litter, and carrying tools and equipment.
Loads and unloads trucks of tools, materials, and/or debris collected at sites.
May need to set up cones and directional signs to redirect traffic flow when parked in high traffic areas; follows MOT procedures when doing so.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the varieties of flowers and plants commonly used in landscaping in Florida and of their soil and moisture requirements.
Knowledge of the use and care of power tools and small power equipment.
Knowledge of fertilizers and soils.
Skilled in preparation and application of fertilizers.
Skilled in the use of equipment used in propagation, cultivating, and transplanting of plants.
Ability to maneuver equipment between plants without causing damage.
Ability to detect insect and plant disease problems.
Ability to walk over uneven terrain and stand for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift 40 lbs+; ability to load/unload trucks with landscaping materials.
Ability to bend/stoop, push/pull, dig, kneel, and crawl.
Ability to operate blower, edger, and trimmers.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and simple written instructions.
Ability to perform manual labor such as pushing, pulling, and lifting.
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods, often under hot and humid environmental conditions, and to handle exposure to insects and chemicals.
