Job Description
|
|
Performs technical work in the collection and analysis of wastewater and stormwater samples. Specializes in wet chemistry and metal analysis of wastewater and stormwater samples to ensure elements are within range as mandated by federal and state regulations. Work is performed under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager. Work is reviewed to assure that established policies and standards are maintained on the basis of observation, conferences, analysis of results, and evaluation of lab reports.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Science, Chemistry, or related field and three (3) years of laboratory experience, one (1) year of which must have been in environmental chemistry; or an equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience. Must demonstrate proficiency in all phases of general lab work.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Analyzes samples by preparing reagents, standard solution, making sample dilutions and operating scientific instruments.
Operates and uses standard laboratory equipment, including pH meters, titrators, dissolved oxygen meters, turbidimeters, spectrophotometers, autoanalyzers, inductively coupled plasma (ICP), Graphite Furnace, and Mercury Anlyzers.
Examines data for adherence to established quality control standards.
Prepares reagents, standard solutions, or sample dilutions by mixing a known quantity of substance with water or other solvent.
Enters samples and analysis into LIMS data base, indicating procedure used, solutions made, dates and times, meter or instrument readings, and results achieved.
Calibrates test equipment by analyzing solutions of known concentration on composition.
May collect wastewater, sludge, sediment and other environmental samples from designated collection sites, using bottles, sampling rods and other containers or instruments.
Performs basic mathematical and algebraic calculations.
Trains new Lab Analysts.
Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures.
Knowledge of wet chemistry environmental lab methods.
Knowledge of proper sampling methods to obtain a "representative sample" and accurate test results.
Knowledge of the proper use of laboratory glassware and apparatus.
Knowledge of safety principles, practices and procedures in a laboratory or field setting.
Knowledge of the hazards associated with various chemicals and substances.
Knowledge of chemistry principles and theory.
Ability to operate laboratory tools and equipment such as drying ovens, Bunsen burners, thermometers, analytical instruments, computer calculators, glassware apparatus, etc.
Ability to work in laboratory, following established safety guidelines while working with chemicals, toxins, poisons, and carcinogenic substances.
Ability to perform tests requiring eye/hand coordination.
Ability to perform basic mathematical and algebraic calculations.
Ability to stand for long periods of time.
