Job Description
 
Under general supervision, applies knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform responsible maintenance activities on power generation equipment. Performs a variety of mechanical maintenance and repair activities on a wide range of industrial equipment to maintain the safe and efficient operation of wastewater treatment plants and lift stations and to avoid damage to equipment involving the installation, operation, maintenance, testing, and repair of high voltage electrical generation and distribution systems, facilities and related systems, transformers, generators, switchgear, metering, and control systems, equipment, machinery, power appliances, fixtures, and other components within acceptable national, state and local codes, ordinances, safety rules, and electrical standards.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT: Performs a variety of skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, and modification of natural gas and diesel fired electric generating power plant and related equipment. Work includes servicing, repairing, and maintaining natural gas and diesel engine driven electric generators and related equipment. Work assignments are received orally and in writing and may be accompanied by sketches and diagrams. Work is performed with considerable independence within established policies, procedures, and technical guidelines. Work is reviewed by the Trades Maintenance Chief through conferences, reports, and results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidate must have High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and (based on level – Entry I, Standard II, or Proficiency III) a number of years experience maintaining co-generation equipment. Military experience is acceptable, but must have experience with a generator manufacturer (Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, and/or Cummins). Must have direct hands-on electrical and mechanical experience servicing and repair equipment used to produce power. Note: One (1) year of work experience is equivalent to thirty semester hours of coursework from an accredited college or university.

Entry Level (I) requires High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and two (2) years of journeyman-level experience in the repair and maintenance of standby generator and/or uninterrupted power supply systems. Education or technical training in a field related to power generating plants or related electrical equipment through a recognized trade union, technical school, or equivalent; accredited college of university may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

Standard Level (II) requires three (3) years experience as an Entry Level Power Plant Mechanic; OR five (5) years of journeyman-level experience in the repair and maintenance of standby generator and/or uninterrupted power supply systems. Education or technical training in a field related to power generating plants and related electrical equipment through a recognized trade union, technical school, or equivalent; accredited college or university may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

Proficiency Level (III) requires three (3) years experience as a Standard Level Power Plant Mechanic; OR eight (8) years of journeyman-level experience in the repair and maintenance of standby generator and/or uninterrupted power supply systems. Education or technical training in a field related to power generating plants and related electrical equipment through a recognized trade union, technical school, or equivalent; accredited college or university may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT: High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and four (4) years experience in repair, operation, and maintenance of various types of diesel, gasoline, natural gas and propane fueled generator sets or similar equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Class E Driver's License is required.

Additional Qualifications for Promotion:

Promotions are not to be considered an automatic function of longevity and are subject to the review and authorization of the Supervisor. The employee’s last performance review must have resulted in an overall rating of Meets standards or better with no factor rating of less than meets.

Troubleshoots and diagnoses generators and associated equipment; when malfunction occurs, determines appropriate method of correction and coordinates and/or performs required maintenance or repair


Disassembles power generation equipment and rebuilds, repairs and/or replaces necessary parts

Inspects and checks performance of power generation equipment with the use of precision instruments such as micrometer, pyrometer and vernier scale; compares measured values and adjusts to acceptable tolerances

Maintains records of performance checks and service of generation equipment in order to anticipate and prepare for future malfunctions.

Plans, schedules, and performs corrective action and preventive maintenance to repair or modify defects and maintain operating condition of generation equipment.

Operates safety equipment such as self-contained air packs, monitoring instruments, etc. to perform repairs in hazardous areas.

Reviews and interprets blueprints, plans and specifications to determine tolerances and procedures for proper operation and maintenance/repair of generation equipment.

Estimates time, parts, tools and equipment needed for generator repair and maintenance projects and completes appropriate forms to obtain items.

Provides input to Safety Coordinator regarding proper operating procedures with other plant personnel to ensure proper operation and maintenance of generation equipment.

Makes recommendations as to design changes to improve the performance or maximize the operational life of generation equipment and provides input as to the specifications for new equipment.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

(Facilities Management)
Makes modifications to natural gas and diesel generator systems to include the installation of pre-heaters, battery chargers, fuel systems and other related diesel parts.

Makes wiring modifications to natural gas and diesel control circuits and electrical apparatus specific to the natural gas and diesel standby system.

Investigates, diagnoses, troubleshoots and repairs natural gas and diesel standby and transfer switch system problems.

Performs preventative maintenance including checking for leaks, worn parts, taking oil samples, orders and installs replacement parts, adjusts, calibrates and inspects the operation of auto transfer switch equipment.

Prepares records of repairs, maintenance, parts ordered and parts used.

Documents modifications to system.

Transports equipment, tools and fluids to and from work sites, operates and maintains equipment, tools and safety devices which are designed to lift, move, transport, repair inspect, measure or protect.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of theory concepts of power generation and stand-by power generation - diesel fuel applications.

The knowledge of electrical codes, utility standards and safety programs as governed by rules, regulations and guidelines of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, equipment manufacturers and others.

Knowledge of internal combustion engines and power generators.

The knowledge of (and skill in operating) the tools, precision measuring instruments and equipment of the electrical and electronic trade and detailed skills in their safe use, proper care and maintenance.

The knowledge and skills in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.

Ability to perform journeyman level electrical and mechanical services in the installation, maintenance and repair of generator equipment and associated apparatus.

Ability to locate and repair defects and to design and incorporate necessary modifications.

Inspects, tests, evaluates, calibrates and updates generator systems and wiring to improve reliability and to assure dependability and safety and compliance.

Responds to 24-hour emergency calls/situations to repair remote generator systems.

Remains current on job specific expertise through various sources (e.g. trade publications, trade shows, vendor communication, etc.) to keep abreast of the latest technological developments and products to improve generator reliability.

The ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications.

Ability to work individually or as a team member to complete work assignments satisfactorily.

Skill in communications, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with supervisors and coworkers sufficient to exchange or convey information.

Capacity and initiative to learn new operating systems, equipment and procedures.

Knowledge of the trade occupational hazards and safety precautions while working in confined spaces, aerial or elevated locations, extreme temperatures, excavations, and other environmental caused conditions.

The ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from lifts, ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

To perform the essential functions of the job, incumbents must be able to perform the following: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions (Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects).

Ability to distinguish frequencies and sounds, color codes and odors in the operation of equipment in order to troubleshoot for repairs.

Knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and repair of natural gas and diesel electric generating equipment.

Knowledge of the methods, hazards and safety precautions related to natural gas and diesel engines and natural gas and diesel engine driven electric generators.

Knowledge of natural gas and diesel fuel requirements, including filter change schedules.

Ability to restore residual voltage to generator exciter field.

Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, service manuals, panels and meters.

Ability to put theory, experience, and training to use in a logical and systematic fashion.

Ability to deal with problems on a priority basis and investigate all alternatives.

Ability to maintain adequate records and reports.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and the public.
