Job Description
 
Under general supervision, applies knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform responsible high voltage (over 600 Volts) electrical work involving the: installation, operation, maintenance, testing, and repair of high voltage electrical distribution systems, facilities, and related systems; transformers, generators, switchgear, metering ,and control systems; equipment, machinery, and power appliances; and fixtures and other components within acceptable national/local codes, ordinances, safety rules, and electrical standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and eight (8) years progressively responsible experience in the electrical trade, four (4) years of which must have been in the installation and repair of high voltage (600 volts and up) services. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required. Master Electrician license preferred.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Installs, operates, maintains, tests, and repairs a variety of high voltage electrical distribution systems, facilities, and related systems including: high voltage distribution feeders and conduits in and between buildings and their respective substations; high voltage distribution equipment including transformers, unit substations, distribution switchboards, switchgear, generators, circuit breakers, panels, cables, and cable splicing and termination equipment; and related protective and metering devices in accordance with applicable national and local codes, ordinances, safety rules, and electrical standards.

Plans, installs, and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment; plans new or modified installations consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.

Coordinates the installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial electrical service.

Performs specialized activities including coordinating electrical renovations and performing high voltage electrical work.

Reads, interprets, and works from construction and design prints, schematic drawings, and specifications. Prepares sketches showing wiring equipment location.

Tests continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components; observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocations, and/or replacements.

Provides allied construction including installation of telephone/fiber-optic network vaults, conduits, and pulling of cables.

Performs standard tests and certifications needed for confined space entry.

Performs layout work on the construction of manholes, vaults, and duct lines for: power, control, and communication cables: equipment pads for high voltage equipment: and cable and bus runs for vaults and substations.

Prepares, develops, and executes schedules for preventive maintenance and routine testing of high voltage distribution system components.

Prepares estimates of time, labors and materials for various electrical projects.

Operates and maintains tools and equipment (infrared cameras, data loggers/recorders, meggers, etc.) associated with the high voltage electrical trade.

Provides guidance and training in the high voltage electrical trade.

Provides guidance and training in high voltage electrical work to other maintenance personnel.

Provides technical guidance and direction to lower-level employees.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of the theory, principles, methods, and techniques used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems equipment, and apparatus including Underwriters Rules for electrical wiring and installation of high voltage electrical lines and equipment.

Knowledge of electrical codes, utility standards, and safety programs as governed by rules, regulations, and guidelines of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, equipment manufacturers, and others.

Working knowledge of the principles and theories of electronics.

Knowledge of the tools and equipment of the high voltage electrical and electronic trade.

Knowledge of proper bending and lifting techniques.

Knowledge of the trade occupational hazards and safety precautions while working in confined spaces, aerial or elevated locations, extreme temperatures, excavations, and other environmental caused conditions.

Knowledge of electric power generating and distribution equipment (i+e+ generators, transformers, switches, circuit breakers, recording instruments, and control systems) and high voltage electrical theory, procedures, materials, and safety standards and general mechanical knowledge and skills.

Skilled in using high voltage tools and equipment including their safe use, proper care, and maintenance.

Skilled in replacing and adjusting mechanical contacts and tripping and time-delay intervals of circuit breakers and relays; in troubleshooting and repairing equipment; in reading and interpreting circuit diagrams and electronic schematics; in using test equipment; in diagnosing problems; and in determining corrective action.

Skilled in applying basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.

Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with other department personnel, vendors and suppliers, staff, and the general public.

Ability to plan and perform work involving the installation, modification, and repair of new and/or existing high voltage electrical systems and related electronic control and protective equipment with minimal guidance by others while maintaining work continuity when unplanned events cause disruptions.

Ability to work in, on, around, over, and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from lifts, ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs+
; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; and to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Ability to receive assignments from management, plan work, determine nature of maintenance or repair needed, determine what effects alterations will have on the total system, and ensure lines and equipment function properly.

Ability to independently work form blueprints, schematics, and etc. ; to determine materials, tools, equipment, and procedures; and to layout work and setup equipment.

Ability to recognize and report special occurrences such as emergency outages and corrective actions taken to maintain service, unusual problems, etc. , to management.

Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds including heavy physical exertion such as climbing of ladders of scaffolds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, and lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
