Job Description

|
Performs limited supervisory and semi-skilled work involving general maintenance and repair of wastewater collection systems, reclaim water distribution system, facilities, and grounds. Performs a variety of tasks involving above-average physical effort and operation of power tools and equipment requiring some manipulative skills. Frequently exposed to chemicals, noxious fumes, raw sewage, raw garbage, and extreme weather conditions. Works during emergencies as a stop sewer crew team member. Work is assigned and carried out according to oral and written instructions, usually from field supervisor. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through direct observation, meetings, and review of work orders to ensure quality and timeliness.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two (2) or more years experience in public works (i.e., construction, maintenance, and/or repair of manholes, force-mains, reclaim water, or sanitary sewer collections systems including the use of tools and equipment used in construction, maintenance, and repair work); or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. GOAA Secure Area Access I.D. badge required within ninety (90) days of hire. Must be able to read, write, and follow instructions. Some positions may be required to pass an annual respirator physical; no facial hair allowed between the face and sealing surface of the respirator face plate. Some positions may require a valid Florida Driver's License and home telephone depending on assignment.

Responsibilities
|
|
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Locates/identifies sewer force mains, reclaimed water lines, gravity sewers and service connections.
Uses of maps, engineering drawings and computer records to determine presence of facilities within a certain area and physically locates utilizing hand tools, probing rods and water probes.
Marks facilities with paint or flags at the surface to identify their locations. Locations must be meet Chapter 556 F.S. to prevent possible damage by excavating agency.
Trouble-shooting stopped sewers, sewer system overflows, or other trouble areas.
Maintains, inspects, cleans and the repairs lateral and to a limited degree, main lines to detect and remove blockages.
Uses closed circuit TV camera, power rodder and other small equipment as needed to determine the cause of the problem.
Performs minor repairs/construction on lateral defects.
Excavates shallow trenches, which may require the use of pumps, compressors, air hammers, pipe saws and other equipment incidental to the construction, repair and installation of sewer lines.
Utilizes safety equipment such as gas detectors, tri-pods, safety harnesses and personal protective equipment.
Conducts various methods - test pressure smoke testing, manhole inspection, night flow isolation, dye water flooding, etc. to locate inflow/infiltration sources within the sanitary sewer system.
Assist construction crews with flagging operation on major sewer projects. Controls traffic via flagging for other crews. May fill-in for absent construction personnel on an "as needed" basis.
Performs routine maintenance and servicing on vehicle and motorized equipment; checking fluid levels-oil, gasoline and water coolants and sometimes troubleshooting equipment.
Maintains inventory of repair materials on truck to perform all types of minor repairs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of sewer cleaning methods.
Some knowledge of the type and uses of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in maintenance, construction and repair.
Knowledge of computer operation and data entry; for the entering of work orders and tracking of materials used and call Sunshine One.
Some knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanized construction and maintenance equipment.
Skilled in use of television camera, rod machine and maps.
Skill in use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
Some skill in the set up, adjustment and use of basic hand and power tools.
Ability to read blueprints and microfilm.
Ability to locate survey lines.
Ability to read, understand and follow verbal and simple written instructions.
Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance.
Ability to ascend/descend into 4 ft. to 18 ft. manholes and bend on knees in confined area for extended periods of time.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor such as pushing, pulling, digging, and lifting.
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time, often under hot and humid environmental conditions, exposed to insects and chemicals and excessive noise.
Some positions may require the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
