Job Description

Performs technical skill level duties, including, but not limited to, signal inspections, plans review, field locates, and administrative duties for the Traffic Signal Maintenance section. This position involves constant contact with contractors, consultants, and engineering personnel. This includes all new installations, changes, or upgrades to the City of Orlando signal equipment. These installations include Orlando's Computerized Signal System, fiber optic, and hard wire network throughout the City and outlying areas. Administrative duties include correspondence to all parties involved in the construction projects, tracking and recording all prints, proposals, faxes, etc. Must critique blueprints to resolve any conflict or potential problems that could occur prior to construction.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and two (2) years experience in traffic control equipment installation; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. International Municipal Signal Association Level 1 (IMSA Level I) Traffic Signal Technician certification required within six (6) months of hire. International Municipal Signal Association Level 2 (IMSA Level II) Traffic Signal Technician certification required within two (2) years from hire. IMSA Traffic Signal Inspector Certification required within two (2) years of hire date. Valid Class B CDL preferred and must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

May serve as lead worker and participates in the installation and maintenance of traffic signal equipment (including school and fire warning signals), overhead traffic signing, overhead internally lighted street name signs, and computerized signal system communication cable.

Reads plans of proposed signalized intersections.

Positions and installs vehicle detector loops in roadway using concrete saws.

Assists utility companies in the installation of concrete poles and metal masts and arms.

Installs span wire, signal disconnects, signal cable and signal heads. Mounts pedestrian signal heads and push buttons.

Installs controller cabinet bases by forming and pouring of concrete.

Digs trenches for conduit either by hand, back hoe or powered trencher.

Installs conduit (PVC or metal) and pulls cable as needed.

Uses air compressor and jack hammer to drive the required number of ground rods. Tests with ohm meter to verify acceptable grounding.

Wires all equipment per MUTCD, FDOT, and City requirements (i.e. cabinets, heads, etc.).

Operates a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment as needed (dump truck, bucket truck, platform truck, backhoe, various electrical and hand tools, etc.).

Assists contractors with house moves and other oversized loads through City streets.

Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, tools and materials used in the installation of all traffic signal control devices.

Comprehensive knowledge of Orlando's Regional Computerized Signal System, fiber optic and hard wire network throughout the City and outlaying area's.

Familiar with all aspects of both electrical and electronic traffic signal components.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work, including maintaining traffic through work area.

Knowledge of the principles of trouble-shooting traffic controlling equipment in the field.

Skilled in the use and care of electronic traffic signal control repair tools and test equipment.

Skilled in the operation of a bucket truck and platform truck.

Ability to lift and install materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

Ability to perform duties outdoors, working in confined areas at heights up to 50 feet, sometime suspended over moving traffic, with exposure to inclement weather, traffic fumes, and noise.

Ability to read and understand plans, and sketches of traffic control equipment.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and orally.

Ability to operate a personal computer, various office equipment and software/programs.
