Job Description
 
Performs skilled and supervisory work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electromechanical and solid state-operated traffic signal equipment. Work involves responsibility for supervising and participating in precision electronic, mechanical, and electrical diagnosis, testing, installation, repair, and maintenance of electrically and electronically actuated traffic control equipment. Supervision is exercised over a crew of skilled and semiskilled employees. Responsibilities extend to assisting in the analysis of need and development of specifications for traffic signal control systems and performing the more advanced technical tasks of installing control equipment and shop testing components. Participates in the selection, placement, promotion, training, safety, and discipline of subordinates. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Traffic Electronics Supervisor and reviewed through conferences and inspection of work while in progress and upon completion.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and five (5) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment; or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required.

Supervises and participates in inspections of electric and electronic actuated traffic light controllers and auxiliary equipment; diagnoses malfunctions; installs, maintains or repairs pre-timed, semi- and fully- automatic, volume density electromechanical and solid state electronic controllers, detectors, pedestrian timers, overlapped timers, photo cell units, pressure detectors and related components.

Supervises and participates in testing the operation of new equipment in workshop, and construction of special equipment or modification of existing equipment from oral or engineering instructions and blueprints.

Participates with superiors in the selection, placement, promotion, training, safety, appraisal and discipline of subordinates.

Enforces safety practices and standards.

Assists in the collection of traffic data and in the analysis of traffic control problems.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in the repair and maintenance of electronic and mechanical devices.

Thorough knowledge of the principles of electronics.

Thorough knowledge of the component parts of electronic and electromechanical devices used in traffic control.

Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.

Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and testing devices used in electronic repair work.

Ability to use testing equipment and to identify defects in electronic and electromechanical devices.

Ability to interpret and work from blueprints, sketches and wiring diagrams.

Ability to assign, train, and supervise a crew of skilled and semi﷓skilled employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to perform duties under sometimes adverse conditions such as inclement weather, sometimes suspended over fast moving traffic, with exposure to fumes and noise, AC voltage wires, and working in confined areas.
