Job Description
 
Performs skilled mechanical and first-line supervisory work involving the maintenance and repair of City of Orlando-owned equipment and vehicles (i.e., refuse trucks, automobiles, pickup trucks, backhoes, rollers, street sweepers, bulldozers, fire engines, rescue trucks, motorcycles, tractors, mowers, etc.). Work is performed under moderate supervision. Performance is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through inspection of equipment, direct observation, the performance of the fleet, and conferences with management. The employee is required to work weekends, holidays, or nights as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate, some supervisory or management experience, experience in all types of maintenance and repairs of a multi-operational fleet, and at least five (5) years of experience as a mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Valid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes required within six (6) months of employment. Must be able to read and interpret prints, sketches, technical manuals, and bulletins. Current ASE Master Tech and/or EVT Supervisor's Certifications preferred.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Determines repair priorities, assigns and reviews the work of several mechanics that perform a variety of skilled and journey level tasks involving the maintenance and repair of vehicles and motorized equipment in the City fleet.

Prepares and reviews all repair orders to ensure that labor, materials, and parts are properly charged and work is completed according to established guidelines.

Maintains logs of repairs performed on each vehicle.

Participates in troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical problems and determines the appropriate repair methods.

Maintains employee time and attendance records for payroll processing.

Requisitions and controls materials, tools, and parts need to perform work.

Schedules and coordinates all outside repairs, reviews invoices, inspects vehicles to ensure work completed and authorizes payment of invoices based on City policy.

Coordinates preventive maintenance for designated vehicles and equipment, oversees routine maintenance activities such as lubricating parts, changing oil, spark plugs, etc.

Trains employees in proper work methods, equipment operation, and safety, enforces safety rules and regulations.

Initiates personnel actions such as selection, promotion, and/ or disciplinary action.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Journey level mechanical skills.

Thorough knowledge of mechanical maintenance and repair methods.

Working knowledge of gas and diesel engines, hydraulics and automotive transmissions.

Knowledge of safety rules and regulations governing automotive garage.

Basic knowledge of welding methods.

Ability to operate electric and manual hoists.

Ability to read blueprints and schematic drawings.

Ability to work for extended periods in awkward positions, exposed to noxious fumes, dirt, grease, and excessive noise.

Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate corrective measures.
