Job Description

|
Performs specialized work in the area of recreation and leisure services. Responsible for performing activities of average difficulty at an assigned recreation area. Under general supervision, performs tasks including leading, supervising, and officiating at a variety of sports, games, and programs. May be responsible for a City of Orlando-wide program and may work out of several centers of different levels. Exercises some initiative and independent judgment in planning and conducting playground or center activities for all ages. Assists in administrative procedures involved in the design and conduct of recreation programs. Work is reviewed through periodic observation by a Regional Center Supervisor while in progress and through reports submitted. Some work is performed outdoors, and employees are exposed to weather conditions, including heat. This position requires work on nights and weekends. This position differs from a Recreation Specialist in that the position is assigned to a Regional Center and the employee in this class serves as assistant supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and two (2) years of experience in organized recreation and/or leisure services; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required at the time of application. Valid CDL may required depending on the area of assignment. Criminal background check and polygraph required. Some college coursework desired.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Plans, promotes and conducts recreational activities; teaches and supervises games, arts and crafts and sports; organizes sports, social activities and special events; schedules center and playground activities; counsels participants as necessary; supervises and leads persons of all ages.
Provides leadership in the promotion of programs through community presentations and marketing.
Monitors hours of the seasonal staff assigned to summer camp programs.
Collects receipts and deposits all center and program fees; bills community groups and processes check requests for contractual instructors.
Maintains discipline at assigned area and confers with parents regarding severe discipline problems; teaches fair play and sportsmanship; administers first aid; promotes safety; maintains athletic equipment; performs field maintenance as necessary; inspects recreation facilities, apparatus and equipment to insure safety; maintains inventory of supplies; submits requisition for needed repairs and supplies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of the techniques of organized recreation activities.
Working knowledge of rules and conduct a variety of sports and games.
Working knowledge of instructional techniques when assigned to a preschool.
Some knowledge of first aid techniques.
Some knowledge of records keeping and report writing techniques.
Skill in administering first aid.
Skill in care and maintenance of recreational equipment.
Ability to provide leadership in coordinating and conducting recreational activities.
Ability to use a personal computer.
Ability to provide instruction to participants engaged in group games and sports.
Ability to physically demonstrate techniques uses in recreational games and activities.
Ability to counsel and advise participants.
Ability to stimulate public participation and support for recreational activities.
Ability to maintain records and compile reports.
Ability to operate various types of recreational equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public, especially when they become irate.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
