Job Description
|
|
Performs professional communications work for the Transportation Department. An employee assigned to this classification is responsible for the planning, development, and production of communications to inform the public of the transportation impacts and parking for special events and other City of Orlando Transportation Department projects. Work is performed under the direction of the Assistant Division Manager and is reviewed through evaluation of work performed. The incumbent must be able to work nights and weekends as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field plus two (2) years of experience in communications or public information; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A valid Florida Driver’s License is required.

Responsibilities

Develops and implements communication plans to inform and educate internal and external audiences concerning City of Orlando transportation projects, services, initiatives, and special events that impact the community in areas of traffic, parking and road closures.
Evaluates and adjusts communication efforts to improve and broaden public understanding of project and event impacts.
Develops communications strategy, including content and messaging, to inform and educate internal and external audiences utilizing social media, internet, email, newsletters, print, and digital signage, and press releases.
Publicizes, coordinates, and conducts meetings on public impacts to roads, sidewalks, parking, and other modal transportation paths both internally and externally.
Coordinates graphic design and multimedia needs for print and digital formats.
Assists team as needed with Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activations.
Coordinates Transportation Department’s events and MOT web content for the city’s website, including writing and editing copy, to inform the public of transportation impacts and road closures related to construction projects and events.
Attends meetings with professional organizations and annual industry conferences to learn trends, network and acquire new skills.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of media, community and public relations principles and practices as well as emerging media.
Knowledge of social media tools, branding, and special event planning and promotion.
Knowledge of research techniques and validating information to be communicated.
Knowledge of the operation of a computer and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Powerpoint).
Knowledge of the City’s mission, goals, and business model.
Skilled at collecting and interpreting metrics to influence communication planning.
Skilled creative thinking and problem solving.
Ability to plan, organize and execute effective communications on multiple platforms and to internal and external audiences.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, officials, outside agencies, and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
