Job Description

|
Performs skilled journey-level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic and microprocessor-based traffic control equipment. Work may involve lead responsibility for applying electronic theory and practices to the installation, maintenance, and precision repair of electronic and microprocessor-based traffic signal equipment and related traffic control devices. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general direction of a Traffic Signal Chief. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through conferences and direct observation. The regular schedule for this position is four (4) days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This position stands on duty at night and on weekends on a rotating basis and may be required to work the night shift on a rotating basis if conditions dictate. Some off-shifts and holidays are required based on conditions, projects, and event schedules.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's Degree and three (3) years of traffic signal maintenance or electronics experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Class B CDL required within twelve (12) months of hire date. Traffic Signal Technician Level I Certification from the International Municipal Signal Association preferred.
Additional Qualifications for Promotion (Traffic Electronics Technician I to II):
Traffic Signal Technician Level II Certification from the International Municipal Signal Association required.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

May serve as lead worker and participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of sophisticated electronic and micro-processor based controllers, signal head components, relays, vehicle detectors, fixed time controllers, and fiber optic signing.
Troubleshoots electronic components using diagnostic test equipment to include power supply oscilloscopes, voltmeters, storage scopes, and logic probes.
Investigates complaints and reports of signal malfunctions; diagnoses problems; and adjusts, repairs, replaces, or removes defective or damaged equipment.
Services and operates a variety of electronic traffic signal control repair tools and testing equipment; operates a bucket truck.
Installs new additions to the electronic traffic signal control system.
Maintains inventory of required repair and replacement parts and materials; establishes reorder points.
Maintains records on service and repair activities.
Assists with the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal cabinets including Controllers, MMUs, BUIs, relays, circuit boards, signal and electrical conduit and cables, signal heads/LEDs, pedestrian signals, pedestrian detection (including ADA detection), vehicle detection, layer 2 switch programming, and deployments; assists in troubleshooting, repairing, and installing fiber optic cable, Cat6 cable, and Wi-Fi networks; and assists in troubleshooting and programming CCTVs and other network devices.
Troubleshoots, repairs, and programs cloud-based school flashers, illuminated street name signs, DMS, driver feedback signs, blank out signs, and flashing beacons.
Uses laptops and tablets with different manufacturer-specific software; also uses MS Word and Excel.
Operates heavy equipment such as bucket trucks, lift trucks, air compressors with jack hammers/drivers, and front loaders (Bobcat) along with various hand tools including powered tools such as chainsaws, grinders, chop saws, drills, and testing equipment such as voltage meters, light meters, optical time domain reflectometers, fiber optic fusion splicers, and visual fault locators.
May work in adverse weather, in traffic conditions, and with live voltage; may also work after hours, on holidays, and during City events or disasters as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, tools and materials used in electronic and micro-processor based traffic signal control equipment installation, maintenance, and repair.
Considerable knowledge of the principles of electronics.
Considerable knowledge of the principles of electronic troubleshooting.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Skill in the use and care of electronic traffic signal control repair tools and equipment.
Skill in the operation of platform trucks and bucket trucks.
Ability to read and understand plans, blueprints, schematics and sketches of electronic and micro-processor based traffic signal control equipment.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to perform duties under adverse conditions such as inclement weather, sometimes suspended over fast moving traffic, exposure to AC voltage wires, and working in confined areas.
Ability to lift and install materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. unassisted, and heavier loads with assistance using safety equipment.
