Job Description
|
|
Performs skilled welding and metal work. Is responsible for performing a variety of welding and metalworking tasks involving the fabrication, alteration, reconditioning, repair, and/or maintenance of metallic parts and equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical supervisor. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and inspection of results obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and six (6) years advanced welding experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must be certified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Welding Society, Mid-Florida Technical School, or a qualified private welding school. Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes endorsement required prior to employment. Formal or on-the-Job-Training required as followsWelder Helper (300 hours), Shielded Metal Arc (300 hours), Advanced Gas Metal Arc (300 hours), Gas Tungston Arc (300 hours), Pipe Welder (300 hours); Welding in all positions on/of steel, stainless steel, aluminum, assorted alloys (ferrous and non-ferrous metals), low & high pressure pipe. Must have home phone or cell phone. Some positions may be required to pass an annual respirator physical; no facial hair allowed between the face and sealing surface of the respirator face plate. Some supervisory experience desired.
FLEET MANAGEMENTValid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes required.
WASTEWATERMust possess certification to work in confined space entry and training/certification in use of respirators.

Responsibilities
|
|
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Designs and lays out welding and metalworking tasks to be performed; reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.
Welds metal components together to fabricate or repair products, pipes, machine parts, motors, generators, and other various equipment.
Prepares pipe joints using auto and hand ox-fuel equipment to perform square cuts and bevel cuts.
Welds pipe joints flat, horizontal, vertical, inclined, uphill, and downhill with and without back up rings and root passes.
Operates electric and/or acetylene welding equipment to heat, braze, cut, resurface, and fit a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Repairs, rebuilds, fabricates, alters, and/or maintains trailer hitches, bumpers, chain link fences, vehicle bodies, and other types of metallic equipment, parts and materials.
Operates power hydraulic presses, saws, grinders, cutters, threaders, and other related metalworking tools.
May operate and train others to operate 45-ton crane (Fleet Management).
Performs minor maintenance and repairs on welding and metalworking equipment.
Operates plasma cutter.
Welds and fabricates parts for work related to keeping the plant working such as working on brackets, broken pipes/rails, etc.
Drives heavy equipment such as a bob cat loader.
Helps remove and install pumps.
Helps install sludge belts.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Advanced knowledge of standard methods, procedures, practices, tools and equipment used in metal-welding and fabricating work.
Advanced knowledge of techniques employed in heating, cutting, brazing and resurfacing ferrous and nonferrous metals.
Advanced knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
Advanced knowledge of the properties of various metals.
Some positions may require skill in the operation of 45 ton crane.
Some positions require skill in the operation of a variety of City vehicles and equipment to move and/or repair.
Advanced skill in the operation of MIG/TIG welders.
Advanced skill in use and care of welding and metal-working tools and equipment.
Advanced skill in the fabrication of steel pieces using electric welder, oxy/acetylene torch, drill press, hand tools and grinder.
Advanced skill in the fabrication, repair, reconditioning and alteration of vehicles, equipment and machine parts which involves standing, walking, lifting of 50 + lbs., bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pulling, and climbing ladders.
Advanced skill in repairing refuse containers which involves standing, walking, lifting of 20 + lbs., bending, pushing, pulling and reaching.
Working knowledge of plastic welds for chlorine lines, chemical tanks in wastewater area.
Ability to pass performance tests and/or standardized tests to meet certification requirements of a specific assignment.
Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, diagrams and schematics.
Ability to work around explosive tanks, sparks, chemicals, noise, noxious fumes and insects; may also work in confined areas, heights and in extreme weather.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to inspect refuse containers to ensure that they are properly repaired, cleaned and painted which involves climbing, detailed inspection and writing.
Ability to act as lead welder on projects and assignments.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to speak, hear and understand and follow oral and written instructions.
