Job Description
 
Performs highly skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of large, complex irrigation systems and their related components. Is responsible for the operation and maintenance of very sophisticated equipment utilized in the water distribution systems, which are necessary to operate the numerous irrigation systems and fountains located on City-owned property. Installs back-flows and controllers; operates locators , toners, trenchers, and Kubota tractors. Work is performed outdoors and employee is exposed to insects and weather conditions. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for accuracy, thoroughness, and compliance with instructions.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and three (3) years experience working in the irrigation and/or plumbing field; or an equivalent combination of related training and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Valid Florida Class B CDL preferred.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Maintains all phases of irrigation systems including pumps, motors, valves, hydraulics, mechanical components, electronic zone controllers, sprinkler heads, and all related piping.

Maintains 3-phase control panels consisting of contractors, motor control protectors, delay timers, flow meters and hydraulic pressure control valves.

Keeps log book of all activities at each system.

Adjusts, repairs, and replaces all components associated with decorative floating aerator fountains which involves stooping, kneeling, crawling, and reaching over head.

Works with related tradespeople in the installation and modification of various sized irrigation systems.

Monitors systems daily and makes necessary adjustments, as needed, at the request of landscape superintendent to ensure proper turf control.

Digs trenches and welds pipes as needed; carries PVC pipe to needed location.

Operates pick up truck, backhoe, forklift, brick cutter, sweeper, and trencher.

Installs controllers and back-flows; uses locators and timers.

Performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of the operating principals of pressure, flows and capacities as related to water distribution systems.

Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools of the irrigation trade.

Knowledge of electricity and plumbing procedures.

Ability to troubleshoot 12-24-110 and 460 volt electrical systems as related to irrigation.

Ability to troubleshoot and repair electric pump motors up to 25 horsepower, including impellers, seals, bearings, start and run capacitors, and check valves.

Ability to troubleshoot and repair electronic controllers and related components consisting of micro switches, drive motors, timers, coils and solenoids.

Ability to operate pick up truck, backhoe, forklift, brick cutter, sweeper, and trencher.

Ability to read and thoroughly understand blueprints and schematics.

Ability to dig trenches and weld pipes from various positions.

Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl and reach over head.

Ability to lift 30lbs.
