Job Description

Performs skilled, journey-level carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair of wooden articles, equipment, and structures. Work assignments are ordinarily received orally or in the form of sketches, blueprints, or written instructions. The employee applies carpentry trade knowledge and skill in completing work assignments, which are reviewed by a supervisor by direct observation while in progress and upon completion.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and at least two (2) years experience in carpentry; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Constructs, alters, and repairs buildings and other structures, including such wooden articles as floors, gazebos, stairs, roofs, partitions, doors, windows, furniture, shelves, closets, screens, screen doors, and related articles using standard carpenter tools and power driven wood-working machinery.

Alters and repairs tables, chairs, benches, cabinets, counters, and related equipment. Installs, repairs, and replaces hardware on such items as doors, windows, cabinets, and related fixtures.

Repairs door locks, replaces broken or worn parts, installs new locks, and replaces window panes.

Builds rough wooden structures such as concrete forms, fences, and scaffolds; does sheeting and rough carpentry on sheds and other buildings.

Performs skilled bench work in a carpenter shop, operating and caring for such power tools as planers, joiners, saws, sanders, boring, and tenoning/mortising machines.

Estimates time and material required for assigned tasks; keeps simple records.

Operates City vehicle to transport tools/materials to and from job sites and to pick up tools/materials from local vendors.

May lead and instruct entry-level carpenters and unskilled helpers.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of carpentry and of the characteristics and uses of various woods.

Knowledge of occupational safety and health hazards, ability to follow prescribed safety precautions and apply safety devices properly in performance of duties.

Skill in the correct, safe and accurate use of hand and power tools and equipment employed in the carpentry trade.

Ability to inspect woods and other materials and determine grade and quality.

Ability to work under extreme weather conditions.

Ability to understand and work effectively from sketches, blueprints, plans, oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform mathematical and geometric calculations quickly and accurately.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Some positions may require lifting of 20 or more pounds.
