Job Description
 

Performs mechanical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of waste treatment equipment and machinery. Determines the nature of malfunctions and suggests how to repair them or if equipment should be returned to the shop for a major overhaul. Decides when the shafts need to be lubricated, when additional oil for the engine is needed, when plugs and points need work, etc. Work is performed under the supervision of the Mechanic Supervisor or Manager. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy.


Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and four (4) years of industrial mechanical experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License or Florida Commercial Driver's License A, B, or C may be required prior to employment, depending on the equipment assigned to the position. Valid Florida Class C Wastewater Collection Technician Certification may be required, depending on the area of assignment. Some positions must pass an annual respirator physical; no facial hair allowed between the face and the sealing surface of the respirator face piece. Must own a standard set of mechanic tools (list attached) and a cell/home phone.

WASTEWATER LIFT STATIONMust obtain and maintain a security clearance and GOAA ID badge within ninety (90) days of hire date.

Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Performs preventive maintenance inspections and lubricates equipment as needed.

Clears pump blockages; changes oil and filters, gauges, and gaskets to keep equipment functioning properly.

Operates wrecker boom hoist to remove and install equipment; uses crane equipment to pull pumps and move equipment around

Installs and repairs of engines, bearings, pumps, valves, and other equipment.

Performs minor maintenance on trucks, edger’s, generator units, and mowers as instructed.

May rebuild pumps under close supervision.

Removes and replaces sludge pump gear joints.

Repacks pumps as instructed.

Adjusts denitrification unit chains.

Lubricates pumps, blowers, bearings, etc.

May operate a forklift to load and unload deliveries

Applies knowledge of centrifugal pumps and the inner workings to be able to diagnose and repair those pumps.

May perform mechanical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of waste treatment equipment and machinery; determines the nature of malfunctions and determines if the repair can be made in the field or if the piece of equipment needs to be removed and sent out.

Performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of standard principles, practices, methods, and tools of the mechanic trade.

Knowledge of occupational safety rules and regulations and health hazards and ability to ensure adherence.

Skill in the correct, safe, and accurate use of tools and equipment relevant to the mechanic trade.

Skilled in the operation of personal computers using Microsoft Windows XP or later version and Microsoft Internet explorer.

Ability to analyze and diagnose problems and perform required corrections.

Ability to maintain records, estimate costs, and order necessary parts and supplies.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, plans, schematics, drawings, blueprints, and bulletins.

Ability to schedule work and train lower level mechanics.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

Ability to speak clearly and concisely using a two-way radio.

Ability to stand for extended periods, work in awkward positions, confined areas, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and push/pull/lift heavy parts (up to and including 50+ lbs.) to perform repairs; exposed to chemicals, fumes, noise, and inclement weather.

Some positions require the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. May also be required to work non-traditional work week (i.e. Tuesday through Saturday.
