|
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING: Performs semi-skilled work in the fabrication and installation of right-of-way signs and the application of pavement markings and thermoplastic markings. Ensures proper placement of traffic barricades and cones; installation of temporary raised humps; installation and removal of temporary curbing and delineator posts; and installation and maintenance of driver feedback signs. At the direction of supervisor, may assist with traffic control for special events, maintenance, and construction activities. Work is performed under the guidance of a Traffic Maintenance II and reviewed while in progress and upon completion. Working hours are 6:30 am to 5:00 pm, four (4) days a week. Required to work some off-shifts and holidays.
STREETS AND DRAINAGE: Works independently and exercises judgment in properly placing barricades for public safety, when to close a street or traffic lane, and when to contact other departments for assistance. Required to work rotating shifts, rotating days off, and during holidays.
Minimum Qualifications:
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING: High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and one (1) year experience in signs and markings installation; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Florida Intermediate Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) or Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification required within six (6) months of hire. International Municipal Signs & Markings Level I required within six (6) months of hire. Must be safety-conscious as work is performed in the streets. Computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office desired.

Responsibilities

|
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Excavates signs, clears area, and prepares work area for maintenance activities.
Cleans work area to ensure work is performed safely and out of traffic; places mushroom reflectors in roadways.
Assists a skilled worker in the fabrication/installation of signs or the application of pavement or thermoplastic markings.
Operates air hammers, thermoplastic equipment, greenlite machine, and other equipment incidental to traffic maintenance signs and markings.
Inspects work areas and construction sites to ensure proper placement of traffic barricades and to ensure that lanterns are in working order; replaces damaged lanterns and barricades.
Responds to emergencies where hazardous conditions exist; assists Police Department and Fire Department by diverting traffic and/or placement of barricades.
Removes and disposes of traffic hazards such as dead animals, fallen trees/limbs, and gas or oil spills; notifies appropriate department of hazards affecting their area.
Maintains records of locations checked, number of lanterns at each location, and calls for service including date, time, location, and corrective action taken.
Maintains security of Street Maintenance and Supply facilities by ensuring gates and doors are locked; controls access.
Ensures lantern room is stocked with batteries, light bulbs, lanterns, and barricades; manufactures and repairs barricades; and issues engineering materials, supplies; and equipment after regular work hours.
Loads truck with equipment, materials, and supplies as directed.
Performs preventive maintenance on truck as requested.
Uses different types of shovels including post hole diggers and spade shovels; uses sledge hammers and steel hole punches (Punching holes into square poles); and uses hammers , screw drivers, crow bars, plyers, loppers, pole saws, hand augers, tampers, post drivers, and squeegees for cleaning signs.
Operates power tools such as power drills , impact guns, and hammer drills as well as assists with using concrete core drills; operates gas powered tools such as weed eaters, hand blowers, and edgers; and assists in the use of gas powered paint machines including learning how to clean machine, change the length and width of paint on the roadway, and how to mix paint to the right consistency.
Learns about the components of a propane torch and propane tank in order to assist in making sure that thermoplastics adhere to the ground correctly
At the direction of supervisor, may assist with traffic control for special events; reads plans for road closures and lane closures; and assists with the implementation of traffic control devices.
Cleans, maintains, and installs signs; tests for retro reflectivity; realigns and straightens signs; and adheres to related MUTCD standards.
Assists in providing related customer service to the general public.
Assists with regular maintenance of inside of the building including moving deliveries to designated areas and cleaning shop areas.
Uses technology such as computers and tablets to log daily work, take photos of existing and repaired conditions, and document work.
Works on special installations; uses special hand tools and installs roadway traffic devices such as Ziclas and other products used for the City's quick build projects. This requires reading engineering plans for the installation of these devices.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of traffic control standards as set forth in the Work Area Traffic Control Handbook and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Knowledge of sign fabrication and installation of pavement markings.
Knowledge of EPA regulations regarding disposal of hazardous materials such as gas and oil.
Knowledge of Microsoft office desired.
Skill in the operation and use of hand and power tools and related equipment in order to complete assigned tasks.
Skill in performing a variety of routine maintenance and repair of municipal property and equipment.
Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain satisfactory work quality; availability to work evenings and staggered schedules.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees.
Ability to drive safely in heavy traffic, severe weather conditions while responding to emergency calls.
Ability to perform duties under adverse conditions such as inclement weather, heavy traffic, fumes and noise, extreme heights, requiring the ability to lift equipment/materials up to 50 lbs., bending, stooping, digging and climbing to excavate
