Job Description
|
|
Performs skilled mechanical work analyzing and diagnosing problems. Inspects, replaces, and/or repairs defective parts. Performs preventative maintenance on City of Orlando automobiles, tractors, mowers, trucks, street sweepers, equipment, fire trucks and equipment, police cars and/or motorcycles, and small engines. Assigns and oversees work and training of lower-level mechanics. Performs a variety of tasks requiring specialized knowledge and skills. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and four (4) years of mechanical experience in the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes required. Must satisfactorily complete two (2) ASE Block Tests or meet all passing requirements for four (4) required academic titles from the mechanical listing. Must complete 6,075 hours of on-the-job training, subject to verification by the "Review Board." Must be able to read and interpret plans and technical bulletins. Must own a standard set of mechanic tools. Supervisory training desired.
PARKS DIVISIONValid Florida Class D CDL required.
STREETS DIVISIONTwo (2) mechanics require a valid Florida Class D CDL. Some positions may require a Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) or Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Intermediate Certification within three (3) months of hire.

Responsibilities
|
|
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Performs analysis and diagnosis of mechanical and/or electrical malfunctions of City vehicles including automobiles, street sweepers, trucks, tractors, police cars and/or motorcycles, mowers, small engines, and equipment by test driving or use of testing equipment such as engine analyzers, spark plug testers, compression gauges, etc.
Assigns/oversees work and trains lower level mechanics in assigned area; ensures safety procedures are followed; and ensures parts and equipment available to complete work assignments.
Maintains records of vehicle repairs parts used and labor expended; orders or obtains parts and supplies as needed.
Operates power tools and equipment to perform repairs such as pneumatic wrenches, machine tools, (lathes, grinding machines), welding and flame cutting equipment, jacks, cranes, hoists, etc.
Repairs and/or replaces defective parts; repairs consist of: engine overhaul, repair/replacement of brakes, transmissions, clutches, motor parts, electrical/electronic systems, hydraulic systems, gear boxes, belts, gaskets, etc.
Inspects, repairs, replaces, and/or adjusts: headlights, windshield wipers, tires, turn signals, vehicle fluids, blades, etc.
May be required to construct/rebuild parts (by hand or machine) and to remove/repair/replace or paint equipment or vehicle body parts.
Operates City vehicle to pick up parts and supplies from vendors, to road test vehicles repaired, or to make service calls.
Repairs trailer lights and replaces tires as needed
Designs and fabricates parts and tools not readily available.
May diagnose problems using computer technology.
Performs complicated wiring repairs and rewiring.
Oversees the work of others; assists other mechanics.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of standard principles, practices, methods, and tools of the mechanic trade.
Knowledge of occupational safety rules and regulations and health hazards and ability to ensure adherence.
Skill in the correct, safe, and accurate use of tools and equipment relevant to the mechanic trade.
Ability to analyze and diagnose problems and perform required corrections.
Ability to maintain records, estimate costs, and order necessary parts and supplies.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, plans, schematics, drawings, blueprints, and bulletins.
Ability to schedule work and train lower level mechanics.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely using a two-way radio.
Ability to stand for extended periods, work in awkward positions, confined areas, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and push/pull/lift heavy parts (up to and including 50+ lbs.) to perform repairs; exposed to chemicals, fumes, noise, and inclement weather.
Some positions require the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. May also be required to work non-traditional work week (i.e. Tuesday through Saturday.
