Job Description
|
|
Performs skilled welding and metal work. Is responsible for performing a variety of welding and metalworking tasks involving the fabrication, alteration, reconditioning, repair, and/or maintenance of metallic parts and equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical supervisor. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and inspection of results obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and three (3) years welding experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Florida Class "E" Driver's License required prior to employment. Formal or on-the-job training required as followsMild Steel, Welder Helper (300 hours), and Shielded Metal Arc (300 hours). Must have a home phone or cell phone. Some positions may be required to pass an annual respirator physical; no facial hair allowed between the face and sealing surface of the respirator face plate.
FLEET MANAGEMENTValid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes required.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Designs and lays out welding and metalworking tasks to be performed; reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.
Operates electric and/or acetylene welding equipment to heat, braze, cut, resurface, and fit a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Repairs, rebuilds, fabricates, alters, and/or maintains trailer hitches, bumpers, chain link fences, vehicle bodies, and other types of metallic equipment, parts and materials.
Operates power hydraulic presses, saws, grinders, cutters, threaders, and other related metalworking tools.
Operates and trains others to operate 45-ton crane.
Performs minor maintenance and repairs on welding and metalworking equipment.
Operates plasma cutter.
Works on a variety of different solid waste related welding jobs.
Assists the Solid Waste Logistics Section Supervisor with maintaining cleanliness of weld and paint shop
Works on different solid waste related weld jobs in the field using a mobile welding truck.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of standard methods, procedures, practices, tools and equipment used in metal-welding and fabricating work.
Working knowledge of techniques employed in heating, cutting, brazing and resurfacing ferrous and nonferrous metals.
Working knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
Working knowledge of the properties of various metals.
Some positions may require skill in the operation of 45 ton crane.
Some positions require skill in the operation of a variety of City vehicles and equipment to move and/or repair.
Skill in the operation of MIG/TIG welders.
Skill in use and care of welding and metal-working tools and equipment.
Skill in the fabrication of steel pieces using electric welder, oxy/acetylene torch, drill press, hand tools and grinder.
Skill in the fabrication, repair, reconditioning and alteration of vehicles, equipment and machine parts which involves standing, walking, lifting of 50 + lbs., bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pulling, and climbing ladders.
Skill in repairing refuse containers which involves standing, walking, lifting of 20 + lbs., bending, pushing, pulling and reaching.
Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, diagrams and schematics.
Ability to work around explosive tanks, sparks, chemicals, noise, noxious fumes and insects; may also work in confined areas, heights and in extreme weather.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to inspect refuse containers to ensure that they are properly repaired, cleaned and painted which involves climbing, detailed inspection and writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to speak and hear.
