Job Description
|
|
Performs skilled mechanical work analyzing and diagnosing problems. Inspects, replaces, and/or repairs defective parts. Assigns and oversees work and training of lower-level mechanics. Performs a variety of tasks requiring specialized knowledge and skills. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and three (3) years of mechanical experience in the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required at the time of employment. Valid Class B CDL required within six (6) months of employment. Must be able to read and interpret plans and technical bulletins. Must own a standard set of mechanic tools. Supervisory training desired.
STREETS DIVISIONSome positions may require Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) or Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Intermediate Certification within three (3) months from the hire date.
Additional Qualifications for Promotion:
Employee must accumulate three (3) years of experience in the appropriate mechanical field and furnish documentation of 4,050 on-the-job training credits, which are subject to verification by "Review Board." All on-the-job training hours competencies must be completed at no less than 80% of the required hours, provided total hours are met.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Performs analysis and diagnosis of mechanical and/or electrical malfunctions of City vehicles including automobiles, trucks, tractors, mowers, motorcycles, and equipment by test driving or use of testing equipment such as engine analyzers, spark plug testers, compression gauges, etc.
Assigns/oversees work and trains lower level mechanics in assigned area; ensures safety procedures are followed; and ensures parts and equipment available to complete work assignments.
Maintains records of vehicle repairs parts used and labor expended; orders or obtains parts and supplies as needed.
Operates power tools and equipment to perform repairs such as pneumatic wrenches, machine tools, (lathes, grinding machines), welding and flame cutting equipment, jacks, cranes, hoists, etc.
Repairs and/or replaces defective parts; repairs consist of: engine overhaul, repair/replacement of brakes, transmissions, clutches, motor parts, electrical/electronic systems, hydraulic systems, gear boxes, belts, gaskets, etc. Repairs trailer lights and replaces tires as needed
Inspects, repairs, replaces, and/or adjusts: headlights, windshield wipers, tires, turn signals, vehicle fluids, blades, etc.
May be required to construct/rebuild parts (by hand or machine) and to remove/repair/replace or paint equipment or vehicle body parts.
Operates City vehicle to pick up parts and supplies from vendors, to road test vehicles repaired, or to make service calls.
Uses City vehicle to pick up supplies as well as do equipment repairs in the field; may operate a fork lift to load and unload deliveries.
Maintains a clean work space; may maintain a clean/organized mower shop.
May provide preventive maintenance of mowers, small engines, and gas-powered tools including: cleaning filters; changing oil; replacing hydraulic fluid; sharpening blades; repairing tires; or replacing parts. Analyzes equipment to determine parts needed to make repairs. Conducts safety inspections of mowers and gas-powered tools.
Repairs sod cutter, chipper, ZTR mower, walk behind mowers, Billy Goat, pressure washers, and water pumps.
Is responsible to order supplies needed by crews to perform their daily tasks.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of standard principles, practices, methods, and tools of the mechanic trade.
Knowledge of occupational safety rules and regulations and health hazards and ability to ensure adherence.
Skill in the correct, safe, and accurate use of tools and equipment relevant to the mechanic trade.
Ability to analyze and diagnose problems and perform required corrections.
Ability to maintain records, estimate costs, and order necessary parts and supplies.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, plans, schematics, drawings, blueprints, and bulletins.
Ability to schedule work and train lower level mechanics.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely using a two-way radio.
Ability to stand for extended periods, work in awkward positions, confined areas, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and push/pull/lift heavy parts (up to and including 50+ lbs.) to perform repairs; exposed to chemicals, fumes, noise, and inclement weather.
Some positions require the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. May also be required to work non-traditional work week (i.e. Tuesday through Saturday.
