Job Description
|
|
Performs skilled mechanical work analyzing and diagnosing problems; inspecting, replacing, and/or repairing defective parts; and performing preventative maintenance on City automobiles, tractors, mowers, trucks, street sweepers, fire trucks and equipment, police cars and/or motorcycles, and small engines. Assigns work, oversees work, and trains lower lever mechanics as needed. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and four (4) years experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess least two (2) ASE T-series certifications and two (2) EVT certifications in a related field, or any combination of four (4) ASE T-series and/or EVT certifications in a related field. May be required to obtain valid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes at the discretion of the department.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Performs maintenance and repair primarily on heavy equipment exceeding 26,000 lbs. GVWR, agriculture tractors, refuse trucks, backhoes, track hoes, dump trucks, excavators, tractor trailers, vac-con trucks, fire apparatuses, and fire rescue units.
Makes major and minor mechanical repairs; disassembles, repairs or replaces work parts; fits new parts; and adjusts engine oil, water and fuel pumps, fuel systems, governors, starting motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes, powertrains, exhaust control devices, air brakes, steering gear boxes, and major/minor hydraulic system components.
Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks as necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition including inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning vehicles and equipment, and cleaning shop/work area; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment.
Repairs, vacuums, and recharges Heavy Truck and Equipment Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.
Responds to emergency requests in the field; determines the nature of equipment failures and extensiveness of repairs/tools/materials needed to accomplish repairs; and the feasibility of effecting repairs on-site.
Provides training to other workers as needed and may supervise in the absence of the Supervisor.
Researches and provides part numbers to the Parts Department when diagnosing and repairing vehicles.
May train and assist vendors with diagnosing and repairs on City vehicles.
Applies knowledge of any computer hardware or software needed to perform a job that requires technology to work on certain vehicles.
Trains and assists other staff in other departments on how to properly operate and inspect their vehicles and equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of standard principles, practices, methods, and tools of the mechanic trade.
Knowledge of occupational safety rules and regulations and health hazards and ability to ensure adherence.
Skill in the correct, safe, and accurate use of tools and equipment relevant to the mechanic trade.
Ability to analyze and diagnose problems and perform required corrections.
Ability to maintain records, estimate costs, and order necessary parts and supplies.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, plans, schematics, drawings, blueprints, and bulletins.
Ability to schedule work and train lower level mechanics.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely using a two-way radio.
Ability to stand for extended periods, work in awkward positions, confined areas, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and push/pull/lift heavy parts (up to and including 50+ lbs.) to perform repairs; exposed to chemicals, fumes, noise, and inclement weather.
Some positions require the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Some positions require the ability to work non-traditional work week (i.e. Tuesday through Saturday.
