Job Description
 

Performs skilled mechanical work and is responsible for diagnosing problems; determining appropriate maintenance work; and repairing and overhauling heavy alternative, gasoline, and diesel-powered equipment, CNG-powered equipment, and hydraulic components with considerable supervision. Provides training for new technicians and may supervise others in the absence of a supervisor. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and two (2) years’ experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic, or accreditation from a vocational institute; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess two (2) ASE T-series certifications, or one (1) ASE T-series passing exam score and one (1) EVT passing exam score in related field within 6 months of employment. May be required to obtain valid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes at the discretion of the department.

 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Performs maintenance and repair primarily on heavy equipment exceeding 26,000 lbs. GVWR. Repairing and maintaining large vehicles such as garbage trucks and fire trucks are critical to providing essential services to residents and businesses. The impact of not having these vehicles properly operate is significant.

Repairs and maintains agriculture tractors, refuse trucks, backhoes, track hoes, dump trucks, excavators, tractor trailers, vac-con trucks, fire apparatuses, and fire rescue units.

Makes major and minor mechanical repairs; disassembles, repairs or replaces work parts; fits new parts and adjust engine oil, water and fuel pumps, fuel systems, governors, starting motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes, powertrains, exhaust control devices, air brakes, steering gear boxes, and major/minor hydraulic system components.

Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks as necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition including inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning vehicles and equipment, and cleaning shop/work area; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment.

Repairs, vacuums, and recharges Heavy Truck and Equipment Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Responds to emergency requests in the field; determines the nature of equipment failures and extensiveness of repairs/tools/materials needed to accomplish repairs; and the feasibility of effecting repairs on-site.

May be required to work overtime and/or respond as essential personnel during emergencies or natural disasters.

Repairs and maintains electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and other alternatively fueled engine and components such as compressed natural gas and propane.

Works with external vendors when the City has to supplement its staffing to assist with large or complex repairs on vehicles; works closely with vendors.

Uses computers to conduct training, to research parts, and to enter work orders and notes into the Fleet administration system. Diagnoses sophisticated vehicles by using various software systems such as Heil diagnostic box, JPRO, Cummins Insite, Mack/Volvo TechTool, Ford IDS, Allison Transmission software, Bendix ABS software, and Wabco ABS software.

May perform hybrid and plug in hybrid service.

Performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of standard principles, practices, methods, and tools of the mechanic trade.

Knowledge of occupational safety rules and regulations and health hazards and ability to ensure adherence.

Skill in the correct, safe, and accurate use of tools and equipment relevant to the mechanic trade.

Ability to analyze and diagnose problems and perform required corrections.


Ability to maintain records, estimate costs, and order necessary parts and supplies.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, plans, schematics, drawings, blueprints, and bulletins.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

Ability to stand for extended periods, work in awkward positions, confined areas, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and push/pull/lift heavy parts (up to and including 50+ lbs.) to perform repairs; exposed to chemicals, fumes, noise, and inclement weather.

Some positions require the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. May also be required to work non-traditional work week (i.e. Tuesday through Saturday).
