Job Description

Performs skilled mechanical work primarily on light-duty equipment with a GVWR less than 26,000 lbs. Repairs and maintains pickups, sedans, offroad equipment, lawn mowers, golf carts, specialized field equipment, trailers, emergency vehicles, and related equipment. This position is responsible for diagnosing mechanical troubles to determine appropriate maintenance work and for repairing/overhauling heavy alternative, gasoline, and diesel-powered equipment and hydraulic components. Work is performed under general supervision. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and two (2) years of experience as an automotive or diesel technician, or accreditation from a vocational institute; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Class E Driver's License required. A combination of at least two (2) certifications from either ASE and/or EVT in related field desired.

Performs maintenance and repairs primarily on light-duty equipment with GVWR less than 26,000 lbs. including pick-ups, sedans, motorcycles, lawn mowers, golf carts, agricultural tractors, specialized field equipment, trailers, and fire rescue units.

Makes major and minor mechanical repairs; disassembles, repairs, or replaces faulty parts; fits new parts; and adjusts engine oil, water and fuel pumps, fuel systems, governors, starting motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes, powertrains, exhaust control devices, air brakes, steering gear boxes and major/minor hydraulic system components

Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks as necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning vehicles and equipment, and cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment.

Troubleshoots, services, repairs, vacuums, and recharges automotive Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Must be familiar with electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and other alternatively fueled engine and components including compressed natural gas and propane.Responds to emergency requests in the field; determines the nature of equipment failures; ascertains the extensiveness of repairs, tools, and materials needed to accomplish repairs; and determines the feasibility of effecting repairs on site.

May be required to work overtime and/or respond as "essential personnel" during emergencies or natural disasters.

Serves as car porter when transporting fleet vehicles to/from dealers, vendors, and other City departments.

At times, deals with hazardous situations; performs vehicle/equipment repairs.

Properly operates a forklift; obtains certification within one (1) year of hire.

Has basic electrician knowledge of AC voltage.

Refuels vehicles as needed; performs small engine repairs; performs basic paint and body repair; performs general welding and minor fabrication.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of standard principles, practices, methods, and tools of the mechanic trade.

Knowledge of occupational safety rules and regulations and health hazards and ability to ensure adherence.

Skill in the correct, safe, and accurate use of tools and equipment relevant to the mechanic trade.

Ability to analyze and diagnose problems and perform required corrections.

Ability to maintain records, estimate costs, and order necessary parts and supplies.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, plans, schematics, drawings, blueprints, and bulletins.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

Ability to stand for extended periods, work in awkward positions, confined areas, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and push/pull/lift heavy parts (up to and including 50+ lbs.) to perform repairs; exposed to chemicals, fumes, noise, and inclement weather.

Some positions require the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. May also be required to work non-traditional work week (i.e. Tuesday through Saturday.
