Job Description

Performs highly skilled technical work with responsibility for the maintenance, repair, installation, and removal of radio communications equipment. Troubleshoots and tests emergency communications CAD systems. Exercises technical independence in determining work methods and procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Radio Systems Administrator. Work is reviewed through observations, conferences, progress reports, and the general operating condition of the radio, computer, and paging systems. The employee be required to adjust to flexible work hours to accommodate operational issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree with two (2) or more years experience in the Radio Communications field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) member, 911 Certification, and valid Florida CDL desired.

Responsibilities

Coordinates, maintenance and repairs communication equipment such as portable radios, mobile radios, and base stations.

Repairs and installs mobile radios/computer equipment.

Maintains and repairs specialized electronic equipment such as, mobile tracking devices, tape recorders, security monitors, pagers and related databases.

Initiates scheduling for major repair work, such as radio dispatch equipment and emergency communications CAD equipment.

Investigates and resolves communication system device failures.

Responds to crisis situations, disasters, special events and training programs.

Maintains inventory of materials, supplies, tools and equipment.

Researches availability and cost of materials and equipment as required; requisitions supplies as directed and reviews, evaluates and recommends new technology.

Recommends factory repair or replacement of faulty equipment as warranted.

Serves as technical liaison with vendors, service technicians and equipment workers.

Ensure compliance with all applicable FCC guidelines, rules and regulations.

Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of standard practices associated with 800 MHZ trunked/radio systems.

Knowledge of installations, modifications, maintenance and repairs of mobile/portable and base station radios.

Considerable knowledge of electronic emergency communications CAD systems.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions when servicing radio communications equipment.

Skill in the use and care of standard tools, equipment and testing devices of the communications trade.

Ability to interpret and work from technical manuals, diagrams, sketches, and blueprints.

Ability to repair and/or diagnosis problems with radio communications equipment.

Ability to use chemicals to clean, seal, and solder antenna cables and electrical leads.

Ability to work around high voltage in radio transmitters and electrical power supplies.

Ability to utilize electronic test equipment.

Ability to perform heavy lifting of cables and equipment.

Ability to operate motor vehicle.

Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, walk and stand frequently to install, maintain, and repair equipment.
