Job Description
|
|
Performs technical work in various phases of computer center operations. Employees in this class set up and run jobs, operate and monitor system consoles and related equipment, recognize atypical conditions to take corrective action. Duties also include manning the computer operations call center on a periodic basis. Receives trouble calls from computer users; assists caller with their problems, recommends corrective action and/or refers calls to other technical source; asks questions of users to determine problem origin, severity, and nature and refers and prioritizes calls accordingly. Work is performed under general supervision and evaluated through observation, results obtained and annual reviews.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate with two (2) years experience in a computer center environment operating computers; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Additional Qualifications for Promotion:
Promotions are not to be considered an automatic function of longevity and are subject to the review and authorization of the Supervisor. The employee’s last performance review must have resulted in an overall rating of Meets standards or better with no factor rating of less than meets.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Monitors and controls computer to process data according to operating instructions through use of computer terminal. Sets control switches on computer and peripheral equipment to integrate and operate equipment according to program, routines, data requirements and operating instructions.
Performs backups of computer systems according to schedule.
Moves switches to clear system and start operation of equipment.
Observes machines and control panels on computer consoles for error messages, verification printouts, machine stoppage or faulty output.
Type alternate commands into computer console to correct errors and resume operations.
Reviews schedules to determine next assignment.
Diagnoses and corrects equipment stoppages and malfunctions.
Operates various computer-related equipment to produce large volume print and electronic reports; loads paper and aligns forms; assists in distributing reports.
Maintains records of hardware operations.
Assists in stocking and distributing computer paper and forms.
Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of an electronic computer and auxiliary equipment.
Knowledge of safeguards and security procedures for equipment and data files.
Skill in the operation of computers, terminals, and peripheral equipment.
Ability to diagnose and correct operating problems and identify error sources.
Ability to diagnose and correct equipment stoppages and malfunctions.
Ability to read, comprehend, and follow complicated instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with callers, technical support staff, and vendors.
Ability to communicate effectively over the phone and in person.
Ability to monitor operations of computers for extended periods of time.
Ability to perform duties under adverse conditions such as cooler temperatures and noise from operation of computers, and to lift boxes of computer paper, forms, and reports weighing up to 40 lbs.
Some evening and rotating shift work is required.

Last performance evaluation must have resulted in an overall meets standards rating or better with no goal rating of less than meets standards.
Promotions are not to be considered as an automatic function of longevity. Requests for promotion are to be initiated by the program manager, considered in view of employee performance evaluations, and are subject to the review and authorization of the Manager.
