Job Description
 
Performs skilled work in the area of communications. Receives and relays messages via two-way radio, monitors telemetry systems, or performs general office clerical tasks as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Performance is reviewed while in progress for technical accuracy and judgment through direct observation and results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and six (6) months to one (1) year dispatching and computer experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Some positions require the ability to type.
 
Responsibilities

Receives and screens calls for all units in service. Operates two-way radio to receive and transmit information to field personnel. As needed calls the Orlando Police Department (OPD), the Orlando Fire Department (OFD), cable and/or phone companies to request service call then informs the client that service has been requested and dispatched.

Monitors telemetry alarm system; reports malfunctions according to established guidelines.

Participates in the development and revision of Standard Operating Procedures and required reports.

Types incident reports, updates emergency numbers file, and maps, maintains log of truck movements and run reports for each incident; may perform basic mathematical calculations.

Answers multi-line telephones; takes messages and logs calls.

Receives and responds to non-emergency calls, referring persons to appropriate agencies using knowledge of City streets and phone numbers of numerous agencies.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules and regulations.

Knowledge of all operations relating to recording, warning, radio, telephone and related communication systems.

Ability to write legibly and type; ability to speak clearly.

Ability to react calmly and competently in stressful situations, to obtain and relay information quickly and accurately, and make sound judgments.

Ability to simultaneously observe and respond to various sources of incoming stimuli.

Ability to operate two-way radio, multi-line telephones, personal computers and software such as: ESMS, Knowledger, Simplex and internet.

Ability to operate a personal computer and software I.e. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, etc.
