Job Description

Performs skilled technical work performing a variety of tasks involving the operation of sighting instruments/equipment. Work requires the application of technical knowledge of instruments and techniques in the measurement/determination of distances, elevations, areas, angles, land boundaries, and other features of the earth's surface. Obtains data pertaining to angles, elevations, points, and contours using theodolite, electronic distance measuring equipment, and other surveying instruments. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed while in progress and upon completion for technical adequacy and adherence to instructions given.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate, preferably with some coursework in mathematics, and six (6) months to three (3) years work experience in a survey party to include experience or training in the setup, adjustment, operation, and care of survey instruments; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Certified Survey Technician Level II (or higher) certification from the National Society of Professional Surveyors required.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Sets up, adjusts and operates total stations, digital levels GPS equipment, and related instruments to locate and establish survey lines, points, angles, and to take cross sections and receive measure areas.

Sets surveyor on line at a point and runs straight lines, curves, and grades.

Reads elevations and angles and gives readings to Survey Party Chief.

Procures soil samples.

May keep field notes, make computations, and prepare sketches of work performed in the absence of survey party chief.

Cleans and cares for instruments; maintains truck inventory and maintenance of equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of methods, procedures, practices, and terminology used in surveying.

Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry, and trigonometry desired.

Knowledge of soil testing desired.

Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions.

Knowledge of electronic data collection methods.

Skill in the use of various surveying instruments and equipment, including total stations, GPS equipment, levels, various types of electronic surveying instruments (HP41 calculator), and surveying rods.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications with some understanding.

Ability to perform work requiring considerable standing, walking, digging, bending, lifting up to 40 lbs., manual dexterity, stamina, agility, and good visual and hearing acuity.

Ability to perform work in adverse weather conditions, and frequently at night; exposed to insects, traffic, noise, fumes, and chemicals.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

Ability to operate a small boat and to swim and stay afloat in deep water.
