Job Description
 
Performs highly skilled and technical surveying work of a supervisory nature, directing and assisting the work of a survey party. Work requires the application of technical knowledge of surveying methods, equipment, and techniques in the measurement/determination of distances, elevations, areas, angles, land boundaries, and other features of the Earth's surface. Performs tasks such as selecting equipment and measurement methods, keeping field notes, and preparing sketches for each job. Performs survey computations, plans survey party work assignments, and supervises crew members in accomplishing assigned duties. Instructs and trains crew members as necessary. Reduces, translates, and prepares field survey records and notes. Researches office and records information as necessary. Interprets and compiles field and records information into survey plans and plats. Maintains records of jobs worked and project numbers. Reviews legal descriptions, plats, right of way, and property maps. Recommends hiring, transfer, advancement, grievance adjustment, discipline, and discharge of subordinate personnel. Conducts performance evaluations. Performs related work as required and other duties as assigned. Assignments are received in the form of general oral and written instructions. Exercises reasonable initiative and independent judgment in making decisions involving directing the survey party, safety considerations, and ensuring that crew members follow prescribed survey procedures. Work is reviewed upon completion for technical adequacy and adherence to guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate with major coursework in Algebra and Trigonometry and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in a variety of engineering and land survey work, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Valid Survey Technician Level III Certification from the National Society of Professional Surveyors required. Must be able to proficiently read and write in English.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Supervises and delegates the work of a survey party engaged in determining the form, extent and position of land corners, elevations, lines, areas, and contours of the earth's surface.

Determines location of control points and selects equipment and measurement methods to be used in describing field information so that accurate data are obtained.

Keeps field notes; records field survey data, prepares drawings, maps and other records, computes angles, areas, lines, distances, elevations using knowledge of geometry and trigonometry.

Reads and interprets drawings, maps, and other documents related to land surveying (e.g. plot streets, storm and sanitary-line maps, legal descriptions, aerial photographs) for survey preparation.

Verifies the accuracy of survey data by checking field measurements made.

Provides training to subordinates in the performance of assigned tasks and job safety.

Recommends such personnel actions as employment, promotions, demotions, and dismissals.

Insures necessary materials, equipment, and supplies are available to party.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques and instruments used in surveying.

Knowledge of legal principles affecting surveying work.

Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions.

Skilled in the use and care of surveying instruments and equipment.

Ability to direct the work of others.

Ability to evaluate the work of others for accuracy and completeness.

Ability to communicate moderately complex ideas and information.

Ability to accurately record, organize, and maintain survey data.

Ability to perform mathematical computations rapidly and accurately.

Ability to read and interpret maps, legal descriptions, and other documents related to land surveying.

Ability to perform work involving a considerable amount of walking and, at times, adverse conditions such as extreme weather, exposure to fumes, insects, chemicals, and requiring manual dexterity and physical agility.

Ability to operate a small boat and to swim and stay afloat in deep water.

Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

Ability to operate various electronic survey total stations, automatic levels, GPS Equipment, Field Data Collectors, and personal computer.
