Job Description
|
|
Performs responsible technical work by assisting with the design, layout and fabrication of all traffic control and special signage manufactured for installation in the City. Involved in vehicle lettering, window layouts, and custom signage using a computerized graphics design arts station and through hand drawn artwork. Performs general maintenance on all machines pertinent to the job and maintains an inventory of all supplies associated with sign fabrication and street name work orders. Required to work weekends and holidays to assist in special events, required to perform some sign installations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Signs and Markings Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduate/G.E.D. and one (1) year experience in sign fabrication; or an Associate's degree in the graphic arts field; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Florida Intermediate Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) or Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification required within 6 months of hire.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Prepares signs by determining correct name, spelling, numbers, sign size, letter size, series quadrant, block number and/or direction of arrows.
Transposes from oral/written work orders or pattern to art work; prepares proper layout using GSP computer and/or computerized graphic design station, or hand drawn art using screen cutting knives/double-film cutter; prepares screen for each color in multi-color sign.
Prepares street names signs form layout to computer, cutting and weeding excess material and direct application to blade.
Covers aluminum sign blades with suitable material for completed work; applies vinyl or ink to complete sign message.
Hand paints designs or letter on signs as requested; designs and performs various art work, decals, door lettering, lettering on vehicles, using stencils or die cutter.
Cleans work related equipment.
Installs signs and reviews installed signs in the field as directed by supervisor.
Assists in monitoring and maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment necessary to meet the work program, replace signs and meet special requirements.
Assists in preparing billing to other departments for special request signs.
Performs traffic control for special events as a crew leader.
Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of sign fabrication, to include materials, tools, and equipment.
Knowledge of MUTCD and Standard Highway Signs Manual standards regarding signage.
Skill in the use of GSP computer signs maker and graphic design station.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of related equipment.
Skill in the operation of a pick-up truck to deliver signs, and to observe field conditions.
Ability to design signs form oral/written instructions.
Ability to monitor and maintain adequate supplies inventory.
Ability to stand for extended periods of time, to lift aluminum signs blanks and sign fabrication materials weighing up to 20 lbs., and to perform duties under adverse conditions such as exposure to flammable paints, inks, hazardous chemicals, and solvent fumes.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and general public.
