Job Description

Performs beginning level semi-technical survey work. Tasks are of routine difficulty and are performed in accordance with established procedures requiring only limited initiative and independent judgment. Tasks include cutting and removing brush, cleaning and caring for equipment, searching and digging for property and land corners, measuring and marking distances, and assisting in establishing lines and grades. This position works under immediate supervision and with detailed instructions provided by the supervisor. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through continuous observation and results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate, preferably with some coursework in mathematics. Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License and obtain a Certified Survey Technician Level I within six months of employment.

Cuts and removes brush and undergrowth with axe or bushhook from line of sight.

Searches and digs for property and land corners using metal finder, shovel, and probe rod.

Enters ditches to take measurements and determine elevations.

Holds end of surveying chain or tape in determining lines, directions, and distances; uses rod to indicate point.

Adjusts and reads level rod target to obtain existing elevations or establish new ones.

Identifies measured and sighted points, benchmarks and monuments by painting or placing hubs, stakes and nails.

Checks tools and equipment to insure an adequate supply of stakes, tapes, traffic cones, and other devices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions.

Knowledge of mathematics desired.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle, survey equipment, and various hand tools.

Ability to operate a small boat and to swim and stay afloat in deep water.

Ability to follow oral instructions.

Ability to read accurately various measuring devices.

Ability to learn engineering field survey routine and equipment within probationary period.

Ability to develop skill in the use and care of surveying tools and equipment.

Ability to perform work requiring physical exertion (standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting up to 40 lbs., digging, etc.) manual dexterity, agility, and good visual and hearing acuity.

Ability to perform work in adverse weather conditions, and frequently at night; exposed to insects, noise, chemicals, and fumes.
