Job Description
 
Performs advanced technical work involving the use of computers in the design, drafting, and maintenance of existing automated map sheets contained in a cartographic database. Mapping duties may relate to cadastral or ownership maps, street or right of way maps, or natural environmental features. Duties are also performed in relation to newly approved subdivisions and other related work. Work is performed under general supervision and evaluated for timeliness, accuracy, and effectiveness.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate with five (5) years experience drafting and mapping legal descriptions using GIS and/or computerized mapping applications; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. College coursework in Cartography, Geography, Engineering, and Photogrammetry may substitute for experience on a case-by-case basis. Must possess an advanced understanding of drafting, drawing, and mapping practices.
 
Responsibilities
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Trains all new personnel and prioritizes schedules and work for the program.

Archives and off-loads graphic/map datasets.

Digitizes manual maps and plans, updates the continuous base map; creates computerized hard copy maps and plots on vellum, mylar, or plan paper utilizing multi-color pen plotter.

Prepares planning maps, illustrations, and diagrams for engineering reports; assists in research and composition of same.

Coordinates with Orange County Property Appraiser staff to determine the effective use of computer maps and GIS databases for analysis and display; establishes quality control and error determination procedures.

Works with Data Center staff concerning system enhancements, problem resolution
and data base/application design.

Conducts field visits to project sites to verify drawings and dimensions, and to check or initiate design projects.

Performs related work as required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Extensive knowledge of VOIS, AMS and CADD.

Knowledge of drafting, drawing and cartographic principles, practices, and techniques.

Knowledge of Civil Engineering pertaining to surveying and mapping.

Knowledge of many line styles, types and colors used in cartographic and mapping principles.

Knowledge of legal descriptions.

Knowledge of GIS attribute databases, query language, report writing facilities and statistical analysis software.

Skill in drawing graphic representations using distances, bearings and other measurements.

Skill in the use of multi-color pen plotters and developing symbol sets.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.

Ability to operate computers for extended periods of time.
