Job Description
|
|
Performs responsible specialized work enforcing City of Orlando ordinances governing vehicle parking. Also issues parking tickets and places thirty five pound (35 lbs) immobilization devices onto vehicles having excessive unpaid violations. Upon completion of training, work is performed with limited supervision, requiring the use of independent judgement, and the ability to communicate effectively with potentially irate citizens. This position requires the ability to stand/walk for extended periods, work in inclement weather, and lift up to thirty five pounds (35 lbs). May be required to work nights and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess valid Florida Driver's License. Must successfully complete a sixteen (16) hour training program within time limit set by the department. Ability to deal with the public required. Polygraph examination required prior to employment. Extensive public contact handling complaints desired.

Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Patrols assigned district by walking
Installs 35-pound immobilization devices (boots) and rides a bicycle for the majority of the shift
Issues parking tickets for meter violations, overtime parking, unauthorized parking in handicapped spaces, fire zones, freight loading zones, improper parking, and all no-parking areas by marking tires with chalk, digital chalking or writing down tag numbers
Checks for overtime parking by marking tires with chalk or writing down tag numbers, and returns to area to issue violations
Issues tow-away notices to abandoned vehicles or vehicles parked over 24 hours in one location; contacts towing company to tow vehicles after 48 hours, and notifies the Orlando Police Department
Installs immobilization device and warning notice on vehicles identified as habitual parking violators with excessive unpaid violations
Reports any hazardous, or potentially hazardous, street, traffic signal and sign, or parking lot conditions, and all malfunctioning parking meters
Assists the public by giving directions or general information
Maintains daily worksheet of all tickets issued, and returns worksheet and copies of tickets to supervisor
Appears and testifies in court as required
Performs other related duties, including collection of parking meters, conducting traffic and parking surveys, and other parking related assignments
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of City ordinances governing vehicular parking.
Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to parking and traffic control.
Knowledge of City operations and appropriate department to contact to report problems.
Knowledge of City streets and location of parking facilities within assigned district.
Ability to recognize and respond to hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions.
Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and effective manner, especially irate citizens, and to promote good public relations.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to walk for extended periods of time, to patrol dangerous areas at night, and to perform duties while exposed to adverse weather conditions, dangerous traffic conditions, irate citizens, and to lift and install a 35 lb. immobilization device.
