Job Description
 

Performs administrative and professional work in public and media relations by providing oversight of all internal and external communications for the Economic Development Department, including the Orlando Downtown Development Board and Community Redevelopment Agency (“DDB/CRA”). Responsibilities include serving as a secondary spokesperson for the Economic Development Department and the DDB/CRA, responding to news media inquiries, coordinating appearances by leadership, composing talking points and press releases. An employee assigned to this position is responsible for website content development and social media account management. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Economic Development Department Director.  Performance is reviewed through conferences, reports submitted, and results achieved.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree with major coursework Public Administration, Public Relations, Journalism or Communications, or related field and four (4) years of professional experience developing and administering communication and public relation programs; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. Master’s degree with coursework in Communications, Marketing or Public Relations a plus.

 
Responsibilities

•    Develops, plans, and composes briefing documents, newspaper articles, stories, speeches, reports, letters, and radio and television scripts, communicating on behalf of the Economic Development Department in public information and outreach matters. 
•    Develops and maintains positive community and media relations through frequent contact with business leaders, constituents, elected officials, and media personnel. 
•    Designs, develops, and updates department website content, including but not limited to, press releases, current events, and service pages to assist customers.
•  Supervise and/or coordinate the work of employees.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•    Knowledge of media relations and oral and written communications.
•    Knowledge of City government structure and public records laws. 
•    Knowledge of integrated communications. 
•    Skilled in public speaking, making presentations, conducting workshops, and presenting ideas clearly and concisely in writing and/or verbally.
•    Skilled in research techniques, report generation, and project management.  
•    Ability to write and produce clear and concise reports, publications, memoranda and letters.
•    Ability to handle numerous assignments simultaneously and deal with frequent interruptions.
•    Ability to independently plan, initiate, and complete assignments. 
•    Ability to research and find solutions to problems. 
•    Ability to operate a personal computer and software programs, camera, and other equipment needed to make presentations.
•    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, elected City Officials, neighborhood leadership and residents, area businesses, and community and social service agencies. 
•    Ability to work evenings and weekends. 
•    Ability to work without direct supervision.
•    Ability to supervise and guide staff. 
•    Ability to manage a communications/public relations team and initiatives. 
•    Ability to work under pressure.
