Job Description

Performs administrative and supervisory work for the Traffic Safety Unit, including the School Crossing Guard program. Is a first-line supervisor with responsiblity for hiring, training, evaluating, and scheduling school crossing guards. Work is performed under the general direction of the assigned Lieutenant. Performance is reviewed while in progress and through results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field and two (2) years of supervisory or lead experience in law enforcement support or program coordination; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Florida Driver's License required. State Crossing Guard Training Certification required. Must pass police background check which includes polygraph.

Responsibilities

Supervises and coordinates the activities of the Traffic Safety Unit, including School Crossing Guard Program.

Plans, develops and implements operating, policies, procedures and certification training program for the crossing guard program.

Coordinates recruiting activities and insures adequate staffing levels.

Review assignments and crossing guard activity with the designated sector trainers providing technical assistance when needed.

Assist with the training and certification of new crossing guards.

Assists in the development and administering of the annual operating budget for designated traffic safety programs.

Conducts field inspections to evaluate school crossing conditions, observe crossing guard perforce and pedestrian behavior to insure the safety of all parties.

Responds and investigates all reported incidents involving Crossing Guards and /or children crossing at guarded intersections. Prepares incident reports.

Prepares monthly and quarterly unit performance reports.

Conducts research for traffic safety related topics and assists with preparation of presentations and reports.

Prepares letters, memorandums, reports, and emails as assigned.

Other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of operations, services and activities of school crossing guard and traffic safety programs.

Knowledge of laws and requirements relating to school crossing guards and the Federal, State, and local Safe Routes to School Program.

Knowledge of general traffic laws and ability to interpret legal documents and data pertaining to traffic safety.

Knowledge of modern principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.

Knowledge of budget preparation and expenditure control.

Skilled in the use of computers, computer software, and other office equipment.

Skilled to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to supervise, organize, and review the work of subordinate personnel.

Ability to understand and accurately interpret basic laws and requirements pertaining to the School Crossing Guard and other Traffic Safety programs.

Ability to complete the appropriate State School Crossing Guard Trainer Certification course.

Ability to resolve problems in a courteous, diplomatic, and effective manner.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, law enforcement officials, and the general public.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, lift light items, and sit for extended periods of time.

Ability to perform duties under sometimes adverse conditions, inclement weather, traffic fumes, and noise.

Ability to see and hear traffic approaching the crosswalk.
